La chaîne Discovery Science présente le lundi 31 mars à 21 heures un document de 60 minutes intitulé «Pompei : Un tueur parmi nous».

L’Alaska Volcano Observatory vient de faire passer ka couleur de l’alerte aérienne à l’Orange et le niveau d’alerte volcanique à Vigilance pour le Shishaldin. Des températures de surface élevées ont été détectées sur les données satellitaires à partir du 18 mars et sont encore enregistrées à l’heure actuelle. L’analyse de ces données montre que les températures correspondent très probablement à une émission de lave à l’intérieur du cratère sommital. et il n’y a aucune observation de lave sur les flancs du volcan ou autour du cratère. Les images de la webcam, les données satellitaires et les observations de pilotes au cours de la semaine dernière montraient de petites émissions de vapeur au sommet du volcan. Il n’y a aucune indication d’émission de cendre.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory has just raised the Aviation Color Code to ORANGE and Alert Level to WATCH at Shishaldin Volcano. Elevated surface temperatures were detected in satellite data beginning on March 18th and have persisted to the present time. Analysis of this data shows that temperatures are consistent with the eruption of lava within the summit crater. The current activity appears to be confined to the deep summit crater and there have been no observations of lava on the flanks of the volcano or surrounding the summit crater. Web camera images, satellite data and pilot observations over the past week show only minor steam emissions from the mountain’s summit crater. There has been no evidence of ash emission.

Je n’ai pas un smartphone et je n’en ai pas besoin. Je peux parfaitement m’en passer. Un simple téléphone portable me suffit. Cependant, ceux qui possèdent cet appareil pourront bientôt être informés des horaires d’éruption du Vieux Fidèle (Old Faithful) et d’autres geysers dont les manifestations sont prévisibles dans le Parc National de Yellowstone. En effet, le National Park Service (NPS) va dépenser 41 125 dollars (environ 30 000 euros) pour mettre en place une application qui donnera aux visiteurs réels et virtuels les horaires de ces événements populaires. Le NPS indique qu’il collaborera avec l’Université de l’État de Washington « pour établir un contact avec les visiteurs virtuels et ceux qui se trouvent dans le parc en communiquant avec précision et en temps réel les horaires des éruptions tout en fournissant un contenu interactif et informatif » une fois que la première version de l’application sera disponible.
Le Vieux Fidèle est connu pour ses éruptions prévisibles qui se produisent toutes les 60 à 110 minutes, en fonction de la durée de l’éruption précédente.
A mes yeux, cette nouvelle application est plus un gadget qu’une nécessité. En effet, lorsque vous êtes à Yellowstone, il vous suffit de visiter le Visitor Center du parc où un écran LCD donne les horaires d’éruption des geysers. Vous pourrez également pénétrer à l’intérieur du magnifique Old Faithful Inn pour obtenir ces informations. L’architecture de la plus grande structure de bois au monde est beaucoup plus esthétique que le petit écran d’un smartphone !
Jusqu’à maintenant, le National Park Service avait un flux Twitter qui donnait les heures d’éruption du Vieux Fidèle et un numéro de téléphone pour connaître les horaires d’éruption d’autres geysers de Yellowstone. Il y a aussi une webcam qui permet de suivre en streaming l’activité du Vieux Fidèle :

La première version de l’application ne donnera que les horaires des éruptions des geysers. Ultérieurement, une version plus élaborée donnera accès à la webcam et à une fonction de « chat » afin que les gens puissent discuter de l’éruption qu’ils sont en train de regarder. Il y aura aussi une fonction qui permettra aux gens de prendre des photos personnalisées du Parc et d’avoir un accès RSS à Twitter et Facebook.
Le gestionnaire du projet estime que l’investissement que nécessite la nouvelle application est justifié car cette technologie permettra de profiter encore mieux du Parc de Yellowstone.

I do not have a smartphone and I do not need one. I can perfectly do without it. However, those who own this device will soon be able to be informed of the « scheduled eruption times for Old Faithful and other predictable geysers” in Yellowstone National Park. Indeed, the National Park Service (NPS) is spending $41,125 on a mobile application that will give visitors and virtual visitors advance notice of these popular events. NPS indicates that it will collaborate with Washington State University « to reach virtual and in-park visitors by communicating accurate eruption schedules in real time as well as provide interactive, informational, and interpretive content » after the first version of the app is released.
Old Faithful is known for its predictable eruptions, which occur every 60 to 110 minutes depending on the duration of the previous eruption.
To me, the application is more a gadget than a necessity. Indeed, when you are at Yellowstone, you just need to visit the Park’s Visitor Center where an LCD screen gives the eruption times of the geysers. You can also walk into the splendid Old Faithful Inn to know the eruption times. The architecture of the largest log structure in the world is far more aesthetic than the small screen of a smartphone!
Up to now, the National Park Service had a Twitter feed that gave the times of eruption for Old Faithful and a phone number to find out eruption times for other Yellowstone geysers. There is also an Old Faithful Geyser Live video webcam which can be reached at this address:

After the development of the first version of the app, with just the times of eruption, there will eventually be access to the live webcam and a chat feature so people can discuss the eruption as they watch. There will also be a feature that lets people take customized pictures at the park and access existing Twitter and Facebook feeds.
The program manager of the project believes the federal funding for the application is justified because of the way mobile technology will improve people’s experience of Yellowstone.

Selon le SERNAGEOMIN, on a enregistré une hausse régulière du tremor éruptif sur le Copahue à partir du 20 mars. Les émissions de SO2 étaient également en hausse. Le niveau d’alerte est alors passé à l’Orange. Il a été demandé aux habitants et aux touristes de ne pas s’approcher à moins de 3 km du cratère actif. Entre le 21 et le 24 mars, les panaches de gaz ne dépassaient pas 500 mètres de hauteur alors que la sismicité était toujours en hausse.

According to SERNAGEOMIN, a gradual increase in volcanic tremor was detected at Copahue, starting on March 20th. SO2 emissions increased as well. The alert level was raised to Orange. Residents and visitors were prohibited within a 3-km radius of the active crater. Between March 21st and 24th, gas plumes rose at most 500 metres above the crater while seismicity continued to increase.
