On parle beaucoup de Pompéi ces temps-ci, mais pas toujours en bien. Il y a quelques jours (voir ma note du 6 mars), on apprenait qu’un mur s’était effondré suite aux fortes pluies qui se sont abattues sur la Campanie. Aujourd’hui, on apprend qu’un fragment de fresque de près de 20 centimètres de diamètre, sur lequel figure la déesse Artémis, a été dérobé dans la maison de Neptune, située dans une zone non ouverte au public. Le fragment a été dissocié de son ensemble à l’aide d’un objet métallique et a fortement endommagé la fresque qui ornait un des murs d’une petite salle de l’antique demeure. Le vol a été découvert le mercredi 12 mars mais a été tenu secret jusqu’à présent afin de ne pas compromettre l’enquête en cours.

One can read a lot about Pompeii these days and the news is not always good. A few days ago (see my note of March 6^th), sections of a wall at the site collapsed during heavy rain in Campania. Today, we learn that thieves detached a 20 cm-wide section of fresco depicting the goddess Artemis from a site known as the House of Neptune, which is not currently open to the public. The fragment was detached with a metal tool, which strongly damaged the fresco that decorated a wall in a small room of the ancient house. Police said news of the theft, which occurred on March 12^th, had been withheld so as not to compromise their investigation of the case.
