L’éruption sous-marine à El Hierro est-elle dans sa phase terminale ? On est tenté de le croire au vu des images transmises par les webcams qui ne montrent plus la vaste tâche verdâtre à la surface de l’océan au large de La Restinga. D’autre part, la sismicité est au plus bas. Les instruments ne détectent que quelques événements d’une magnitude en générale inférieure à M 2. Il ne faudrait toutefois pas affirmer trop vite que l’éruption est terminée. On a déjà vu des rechutes au cours des semaines précédentes. Il faudra attendre encore plusieurs semaines pour s’assurer que tout est redevenu comme avant.
Is the eruption at El Hierro coming to an end ? It might be, judging from the webcam images that no longer show the greenish stain at the surface of the ocean, off La Restinga. On the other hand, seismicity is at its lowest, with a few events whose magnitude is below M 2. However, it would be a mistake to say right now that the eruption is over. There have been relapses during the past weeks and we’ll have to wait more weeks before saying the situation has gone back to normal.
