D’après l’Alaska Volcano Observatory, les images satellites ont révélé à 4h02 (heure d’Alaska) que le Cleveland avait émis un panache de cendre qui s’étirait en direction E-SE.
L’événement, probablement dû à une séquence explosive ponctuelle, a entraîné le passage du niveau d’alerte pour l’aviation du Jaune à l’Orange (éruption possible ou en cours, avec risque d’émissions de cendre de faible importance).   

According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory, satellite images at 4:02 a.m. (Alaska time) showed Cleveland Volcano had spewed ash 4,500 metres into the air in a cloud that moved east-southeast.  
The event was significant enough to raise the aviation colour code from yellow to orange, representing an increased potential of eruption, or an eruption under way with minor ash emissions.

Il est très difficile d’obtenir des informations sur l’éruption qui a eu lieu (et qui semble se poursuivre) sur l’archipel de Zubair, au large de la côte occidentale du Yémen [voir ma note du 20 décembre]. La NASA a mis en ligne deux photos du site vu depuis l’espace, avant et pendant l’éruption. Les images montrent ce qui ressemble à une nouvelle île, là où il n’y avait rien auparavant. Un volumineux panache s’échappe de cette nouvelle île.

Cet événement montre, si besoin était, qu’il reste encore beaucoup à faire en matière de prévision volcanique! Beaucoup de scientifiques pensaient qu’une nouvelle île allait sortir de l’océan à El Hierro. Manque de bol, sans qu’on s’y attende, c’est dans la Mer Rouge qu’elle émerge!

It is very difficult to get details about the eruption that took place (and seems to be going on) along the Zubair Group, off the west coast of Yemen [see my note of December 20th]. NASA has released two images of the site seen from space, before and during the eruption. The images show what looks like a new island where previously there was none. A thick plume rises from the new island.

This event shows there’s still a long way to go as far as volcanic prediction is concerned! Many experts thought a new island would come out of the ocean at El Hierro …and it appears quite unexpectedly in the middle of the Red Sea!
