Un nouveau séisme de près de M 3 sur l’échelle de Richter a été enregistré ce matin à 6h57 (heure locale) au nord de Godabunga sur le glacier Myrdalsjökull. Sa profondeur est estimée à 5 km, dans la partie nord de la caldeira.
Une petite réplique a été observée 3 minutes plus tard, mais aucun autre événement n’a été enregistré depuis ce matin.
La zone a connu une importante activité sismique cet été et, selon les scientifiques islandais, ce dernier séisme fait partie de cette activité persistente.
On peut lire dans l’Iceland Review que le Katla est sous étroite surveillance et que les habitants de Vik sont prêts à évacuer le village en cas de crue glaciaire.
Another earthquake measuring just below three points on the Richter scale was recorded north of Godabunga in the Myrdalsjökull Glacier at 6:57 this morning. The quake occurred at a depth of five kilometers in the northern side of the Mýrdalsjökull caldera.
A smaller aftershock was registered three minutes later but no further seismic activity has been observed since.
There has been considerable activity in the area this summer and, according to Icelandic scientists, the quakes this morning are considered part of this continued unrest.
One can read in the Iceland Review that Katla is under close observation and the inhabitants of Vik are prepared to evacuate in case of glacial flooding.
