Tambora (10 avril 1815) Une éruption à ne pas oublier // An eruption not to forget: Tambora (April 10th 1815)

   Aujourd’hui 10 Avril marque l’anniversaire de l’éruption du Tambora le 10 Avril 1815. Il ne faudrait pas oublier cet événement qui a causé ce qu’on a appelé «l’année sans été» en 1816. Cette année-là, le temps froid et nuageux a anéanti les cultures à travers l’hémisphère nord. Le volcan avait été calme pendant environ 5000 ans. Il s’est réveillé vers 1812 pour culminer avec l’éruption du 10 Avril 1815 qui déversé quelque 160 kilomètres cubes de matériaux sur les environs et dans l’atmosphère. Selon certaines estimations, ce fut la plus grande éruption volcanique de l’histoire.

   Today April 10^th marks the anniversary of the eruption of Tambora volcano on April 10^th 1815. This eruption should be remembered as it caused what was called “The Year without a Summer” in 1816. That year, cold and cloudy conditions killed crops across the Northern Hemisphere. The volcano had been quiet for some 5,000 years. It woke up around 1812, culminating in the April 10^th, 1815 eruption which dumped an estimated 160 cubic kilometres of material onto the surrounding countryside and into the air. By some estimates, it was the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history.
