L’Ouest américain: Des canyons à volonté! // Western USA : Canyons at will !

Before completing my journey across western United States (it will probably be the last), I wanted to have a look at some of my favorite canyons. Unlike many people, it is not the Grand Canyon that comes first, however impressive it may be. I prefer the delicacy of the sculptures of Bryce Canyon, the paths cut by Green River or the curves of the Colorado River in Canyonlands …

// A cable car soon on Kawah Ijen (Indonesia)?

If the information had been published on April 1st, I would laugh. Unfortunately, the article was released by the Jakarta Post on June 8th 2017. We learn that plans to upgrade tourism facilities at Kawah Ijen crater, complete with a cable car across the area, are currently being discussed at the Tourism Ministry, as this popular destination in East Java has been included in the national strategic tourism plan. The head of Bondowoso Tourism says the development would include other related parties, including the Environment and Forestry Ministry and private investors. He said: « The Ijen crater tourist site is set to be an international destination that would be equipped with a cable car from Paluding to the crater. Visitors would also be able to enjoy the crater and the surrounding natural tourist area from above in the cable car. »

Although located between Bondowoso and Banyuwangi, the Ijen crater was managed by the Jember Natural Resource Conservation Agency (BKSDA) before the central government listed the site in its national plan.

With hordes of tourists invading Iceland, especially in the summer, authorities are confronted more and more problems. They usually have to do with safety or the lack of respect of the country’s fragile Nature. Wilderness camping comes first in that respect.

According to the Icelandic law it is illegal to camp in Vatnajökull National Park, outside of camping areas. However, many people do this every summer. This behaviour is about to come to an end.

Park rangers will travel around Vatnajökull this summer and charge those who camp in no-camping areas. They will be asked to move away and forced to pay as much as they would pay for staying the night in one of the camping areas.

Among those who practice wilderness camping, very few are staying in tents. Most of them are in campers, staying in parking lots or in lay-bys. The problem is that there are no toilet facilities in these places. People use the side of the road or parking lot instead, leaving their excrement behind when they leave the next day.

Most people think the fee for the camping areas is too high, so they expect to camp for free. Others affirm it is not clear enough where the National Park ends, although there are plenty of signs. People should bear in mind that it is their responsibility to find out where they can camp, and where they can’t.

Not far from Bisbee, one can plan a stop at Tombstone which gathered up to 15,000 inhabitants when the silver mines were in full swing. Their exploitation declined rapidly. In 1900, the population of Tombstone was only 700 inhabitants. It is about 1500 at present. Nowadays, Tombstone is a tourist city with a Far-West aspect. The gunfight at OK Corral on October 26, 1881 is still in the air. Although only three men were killed during the fight, it is generally considered the most famous shooting in the history of the Western Conquest. The brothers Wyatt Earp, Morgan Earp, Virgil Earp, Frank McLaury, Tom McLaury, Billy Claiborne, Ike Clanton and Billy Clanton were involved in the event. Morgan Earp, Virgil Earp and Doc Holliday were injured. The two brothers McLaury and Billy Clanton were killed and buried in Boothill Cemetery, another highly visited place in Tombstone. Every day, tourists can witness the reconstitution of the gunfight with local actors.
