Une coulée pyroclastique sur l’Etna? Pas vraiment! // A pyroclastic flow on Mount Etna? Not really

drapeau anglaisThe effusive episode of the last days continues on the eastern flank of the NSEC. The tremor is still quite irregular.

On February 11th, at 7 a.m. or so, a collapse occurred on the lower eastern flank of the NSEC. This collapse, later confirmed during an overflight, does not really come as a surprise; indeed,  an impressive amount of materials has accumulated on the flank of the cone since the beginning of the eruptive episode. INGV explains that an unstable volume of partly hot materials broke loose from the flank and travelled along the slope, just like a pyroclastic flow, without being a true one. Judging from the thermal camera images, the temperature of the avalanche could not be compared with that of the pyroclastic flows of Mount Sinabung, for instance. Besides, the brown colour revealed the presence of ancient materials. This does not happen during a dome collapse! The avalanche came to an end at the bottom of the western wall of the Valle del Bove. Its front was about 1 km wide and it had travelled about 3-4 km. It is interesting to observe that a lava flow came out of the notch that was left by the collapse, but the strombolian and effusive activity described previously did not seem to be affected by this morning’s event. This evening, lava is still travelling along the eastern flank of the NSEC.

Etna 1669 !

drapeau anglaisIf you click on the link below, you will see the digital reproduction of the fresco one can admire in the sacristy of the cathedral in Catania. This document allows to perfectly see the lava flow produced by Mount Etna’s eruption in 1669. Lava engulfed several villages that have been replaced by the northern suburbs of Catania. Don’t hesitate to enlarge the image. The details will appear in a more striking way.

The high resolution image also allows to understand the morphology of the town before the disastrous earthquake of 1693. Bottom left, one can see Castello Ursino, one of the very few structures that survived the quake that destroyed a large part of SE Sicily.

Kilauea (Hawaii / Etats Unis)

drapeau anglaisAfter a long period of deflation, Kilauea is going through a long episode of inflation that started on February 4th (see graph below). As a consequence, the Halema’uma’u lava lake – which dropped to 70 metres below the crater rim at the lowest – has now risen and lies 41 metres below the rim, according to the latest measurements. We can read on some websites that if the rising tendency continues, it will soon be possible to see the lake surface from the terrace of the Jaggar Museum (the only authorised place to have a good view of the crater). However, the inflation has now stabilized and if the volcano behaves like it did in the past, a deflationary tendency is likely to start very soon. Personally, I do not think the inflation will go on and that lava will be visible from the Museum. I do not think either that an overflow will occur in the near future.

For the rest, the situation remains unchanged at Pu’uO’o with a spatter cone and a small lava pond in the north-eastern eastern part of the crater. Lava is still flowing to the north where a few breakouts are setting fire to the forest.

Etna (Sicile / Italie): La lave continue à couler // Lava is still flowing

drapeau anglais8:00: The situation remains unchanged. The tremor is still above background level, sometimes rising, sometimes dropping. The archives of the LAVE webcam show that strombolian activity has been reduced at the summit of the NSEC during the past hours. INGV’s thermal camera reveals that the lava flow of the eastern flank of the cone is now divided in two branches toward the Valle del Bove.
