Etna (Sicile / Italie): Réveil du Nouveau Cratère SE // New activity at the NSEC

drapeau-francais7 h30: Les webcams montrent ce matin qu’il n’y a pas eu d’activité éruptive vraiment intense dans la Voragine au cours de la nuit. Toutefois, le tremor montre de nouveau une tendance à la hausse ce matin et il semble bien qu’un point d’activité soit apparu sur le Nouveau Cratère SE. Cette dernière observation demande confirmation. Il est fort à parier que ce dimanche ne sera pas d’une grande quiétude sur l’Etna !

However, the tremor again shows an upward trend this morning and it seems that some activity has appeared on the New SE Crater (NSEC). This last observation requires confirmation. It is likely that this Sunday will not be of great tranquility of Mount Etna!

drapeau-francais10h30: Les images fournies par l’une des webcams RadioStudio7 et la caméra thermique de l’INGV montrent qu’une coulée de lave est probablement en train de s’échapper du pit crater qui s’est ouvert récemment sur le flanc oriental du NCSE.

En cliquant sur ce lien, vous verrez une belle photo aérienne du NCSE et de la coulée qui s’échappe du pit crater avec un panache de gaz bleus.

drapeau-anglais10:30: The images provided by one of the RadioStudio 7 webcams and the INGV thermal camera show that a lava flow is probably coming out of the pit crater that recently opened on the eastern flank of the NSEC.

By clicking on this link, you will see an aerial photo of the NSEC anad the lava flow coming out of the pit crater with a plume of blue-colored gas.

drapeau-francais17h30: La situation est restée relativement stable au cours de l’après-midi, même si on observe une légère hausse du tremor. Aujourd’hui, l’activité éruptive s’est déplacée vers le NCSE où l’on a observé une petite activité strombolienne qui est en train de s’intensifier, justifiant la hausse du tremor. Une belle coulée de lave dévale la pente E du cône sur une centaine de mètres. Le transfert d’activité vers le NCSE semble avoir considérablement calmé la Voragine.

Ci-dessous, les 4 captures d’écran de la webcam RadioStudio7 et de la webcam thermique montrent l’évolution de la situation sur le NCSE au cours de l’après-midi et de la soirée. On voit la progression de la coulée.

drapeau-anglais17:30: The situation has remained quite stable during the afternoon, even if a slight increase in the tremor has been observed. Today, eruptive activity moved toward the New SE Crater where a small stromboliazan activity is currently observed together with a lava flo that is travelling about 100 metres down the eastern flank of the cone. The transfer of activity toward the NSEC has led to a strong decrease in activity within the Voragine.

Here below, four screenshots of the RadioStudio7 webcam and of the thermal camera show the evolution at the NSEC during the afternoon and the evening. We can see the advance of the lava flow.

Etna (Sicile / Italie): L’activité du Nouveau Cratère SE // Activity at the New SE Crater

drapeau francaisLes dernières heures ont confirmé ce que j’écrivais dans ma note d’hier 10 août, à savoir la baisse d’activité au pied du Cratère NE et une réactivation du NCSE. En plus de l’activité strombolienne qui affecte le sommet du cône (voir l’image de la webcam L.A.V.E. ci-dessous), une bouche s’est ouverte dans la partie supérieure du versant E, avec une coulée de lave qui a atteint la base du cône. Le tremor est de nouveau en hausse.

Au vu de ces derniers événements, il semblerait qu’il existe une corrélation entre l’activité du Cratère NE et celle du NCSE. Cette corrélation a déjà été observée ponctuellement dans le passé, mais n’a jamais été vraiment confirmée.

drapeau anglaisThe last hours have confirmed what I wrote in my note yesterday August 10th, namely the decrease in activity at the base of the NE Crater and the reactivation of the NCSE. In addition to the strombolian activity that affects the summit of the cone (see webcam image below), a vent opened in the upper part of the eartern flank, with a lava flow that reached the base of the cone. The eruptive tremor is again increasing.
Judging from the recent events, it seems that there is a correlation between the activity of the NE Crater and that of the NSEC. This correlation was punctually observed in the past, but was never really confirmed.

Etna (Sicile / Italie): Poursuite de l’épisode éruptif // The eruptive episode is going on

drapeau francaisDans son dernier bulletin (28 février 2014), l’INGV confirme la poursuite de l’épisode éruptif commencé le 21 janvier sur le Nouveau Cratère SE (NCSE). On observe une petite activité strombolienne qui s’accompagne parfois de quelques émissions de cendre. La lave continue à s’écouler de la bouche située dans la partie inférieure du cône, dans le vide laissé par l’effondrement du 11 février. La lave s’écoule vers la partie supérieure de la Valle del Bove en formant des empilements mais n’atteint jamais la base de la paroi.

S’agissant de l’instabilité du versant oriental du NCSE, on observe parfois des émissions de cendre de couleur rougeâtre et des anomalies thermiques quand de petits effondrements se produisent à proximité de la bouche active. Le tremor ne montre pas de variations significatives. Rappelons qu’une interdiction d’accès à la Valle del Bove a récemment été promulguée par la Préfecture de Catane.

drapeau anglaisIn its latest report (February 28th 2014), INGV confirms that the eruptive episode is going on at the NSEC. One can observe some slight strombolian activity with sometimes a few ash emissions. Lava keeps flowing from the vent located on the lower part of the cone, within the collapse notch which appeared on February 11th. Lava is flowing toward the upper part of the Val del Bove where it accumulates but never reaches the lower part of the wall.

As far as the instability of the NSEC is concerned, one can sometimes observe some reddish ash plumes and a few thermal anomalies when collapses occur close to the active vent. The tremor does not show significant fluctuations. Let’s remind you that an interdiction of access to the Val del Bove has recently been released by the Prefecture of Catania.

drapeau francais6 heures: L’activité strombolienne et l’émission de lave sur le versant SE du NCSE continuent et semblent même s’intensifier si l’on en juge par le tracé du tremor qui est à la hausse depuis le 22 janvier. La coulée atteignait hier soir une longueur d’environ 500 mètres.

18h30: Le tremor s’est stabilisé au niveau qui était le sien ce matin. Les images de la webcam L.A.V.E. montrent ce soir la persistance de l’activité strombolienne et de l’effusion de lave sur le flanc SE du NCSE.

18:30: The tremor has kept the same level as this morning. The images of the L.A.V.E. webcam show that strombolian activity and lava effusion continue on the SE flank of the NSEC.
