Turrialba (Costa Rica)

Une nouvelle éruption accompagnée de panaches de cendre s’est produite sur le Turrialba à 11h24 le dimanche 5 avril. Elle a duré une heure. Selon l’OVSICORI, la colonne de cendre a atteint 500 mètres de hauteur et a déversé de grandes quantités de cendre sur les fermes des environs. A 13h30 le volcan émettait encore de grandes quantités de gaz et de vapeur mais très peu de cendre. Il est fait état d’abondantes retombées de cendre à l’est de San José sur les localités de Tres Ríos et San Pedro, ainsi que sur la banlieue ouest de Escazú.

L’OVSICORI a aussi mis en ligne une vidéo accélérée montrant l’éruption depuis l’Irazu très proche. Au début, les touristes se précipitent vers la plateforme d’observation pour voir l’éruption, mais ils regagnent rapidement leurs voitures quand la cendre commence à tomber sur le site. Il faut rappeler qu’il est conseillé conduire très prudemment quand la cendre est en présente sur les routes qui deviennent glissantes comme avec du verglas.

Another ash eruption occurred at Turrialba Volcano at 11:24 a.m. on Sunday and lasted for an hour. According to OVSICORI, the column of ash reached 500 metres into the sky and rained large quantities of ash onto nearby farms. As of 1:30 p.m. the volcano was still emitting large quantities of gas and vapour though very little ash. There are reports of large quantities of ash East of San José in Tres Ríos and San Pedro as well as in the western suburb of Escazú.

OVSICORI has also released a time lapse video showing the eruption seen from nearby Irazu volcano. At the beginning tourists are running to the observation platform to see the eruption but they are quickly moving to their cars when ash starts falling over the site. It should be remembered that you need to drive very carefully when ash is falling on the roads that become slippery, like with ice on them.
