L’éruption du Fogo (Iles du Cap Vert): Une catastrophe en vue // The Fogo eruption might become a real disaster

drapeau francais20 heures: La lave a accéléré sa progression ce dimanche matin, à raison de 20 mètres par heure. Selon la Protection Civile, si la situation continue, la lave pourrait atteindre « les premières maisons de la partie gauche de Portela » ce dimanche en fin d’après-midi.
De plus, si la lave continue avec la même vitesse, la cave à vin pourrait aussi être recouverte car elle se trouve à moins de 200 mètres de distance.
En plus du déplacement de la population, l’éruption a détruit plus de 400 hectares de terres cultivables dont 26 ha de terres agricoles fertiles. 15 maisons ont été détruites, ainsi que 14 réservoirs, la route principale et la route alternative. Le bâtiment abritant le Siège social du Parc, qui avait déjà été endommagé, est maintenant complètement détruit lui aussi. Il avait été édifié en juillet 2013 grâce à une coopération avec l’Allemagne et il était ouvert depuis le mois de mars 2014.

In addition to population displacement, the eruption has destroyed more than 400 hectares of land, 26 of which is fertile ground for agriculture. 15 houses have also been consumed, as well as14 cisterns, the main road and the alternative one. The Park’s Headquarters building, which had already been damaged, has now been completely destroyed. It was funded by the German cooperation, was built in mid-July 2013 and opened in March this year.

drapeau francais18 heures : Selon un géophysicien en poste sur l’île de Fogo, si la lave continue à couler comme elle l’a fait vendredi, il est « probable » que le village de Portela ne disparaîtra pas de la carte. En effet, la quantité de lave actuellement émise par unité de temps « n’est pas très grande » de telle sorte que lorsqu’elle arrive près de Portela, elle « refroidit et se solidifie. »
La sismicité dans Chã das Caldeiras, après avoir augmenté jeudi matin, montre actuellement un déclin, ce qui est confirmé par les signaux reçus à la station météo de São Vicente.
Toutefois, de l’avis du géophysicien, « l’activité volcanique pourrait durer environ deux mois. »
Pour le moment, il n’y a pas de population à risque mais la lave coule toujours et les autorités sont inquiètes car certains habitants ont commencé à revenir chez eux à Portela.

Hawaii: La menace semble s’éloigner // Lava is no longer a threat, maybe

drapeau francaisLes scientifiques du HVO ont déclaré lundi après-midi, à l’issue d’observations sur le terrain, que la lave n’avançait plus dans le réseau de tunnels à environ 5 km en amont de Apa’a Street. Les images thermiques ne révèlent pas de points chauds entre le front de coulée inactif à environ 150 mètres de Pahoa Village Road  et la zone active à plusieurs kilomètres en amont de Apa’a Street.
Cet arrêt des coulées est probablement dû à l’importante émission de lave observée depuis quelques jours dans le secteur de Kahaualea, à environ 1,8 km en aval du Pu’u O’o, et qui a considérablement réduit l’alimentation au niveau du réseau de tunnels..
Cependant, les coulées encore actives entre 5 et 8 kilomètres en amont de Apa’a Street élargissent le champ de lave du 27 juin en continuant leur progression. Le champ de lave présente une largeur de 250 à 350 mètres.
Aucune coulée ne représente actuellement une menace immédiate pour les zones habitées. L’avis d’évacuation qui affectaient les habitants sous la menace immédiate de la lave a été levé par la Protection Civile.Il leur est toutefois demandé de rester vigilants.

drapeau anglaisHVO scientists determined Monday afternoon during field observations that lava was no longer moving through the tube system about 5 km above Apa’a Street. Thermal images do not reveal any particularly hot spots between the stalled flow front (about 150 metres from Pahoa Village Road) and the active breakout located several kilometres upslope of Apa’a Street..
The halt is likely the result of a large breakout from the lava tube at Kahaualea, about 1.8 km below the Pu’u O’o vent, that affected the supply of lava to the tube downslope.
However, the breakouts extending from about 5 to 8 kilometres above Apaa Street are beginning to widen the June 27th  lava flow field as they continue to advance downslope toward Apaa Stree. The flow field now varies between 250 yards and 350 metres in width.
None of the breakouts or surface flows currently pose an immediate threat to area communities. An evacuation notice for those living in the immediate threat of the flow has been lifted by Hawaii County Civil Defense. However, while residents are no longer on notice, they are urged to remain vigilant.

drapeau francaisIl n’est pas évident de trouver des informations fiables sur l’éruption du Fogo et on relève des contradictions dans les rapports qui décrivent la situation. Une chose est sure: L’éruption continue même si, selon certains articles, son intensité semble diminuer. Il semblerait que seule la branche nord de la coulée soit active. La lave ne progresserait plus que d’une vingtaine de mètres par heure, contre 30 à 40 mètres précédemment. Quoi qu’il en soit, l’île doit faire face à une situation critique dans la Cha Caldeira où la lave a détruit plusieurs bâtiments dans le village de Portela, y compris le quartier général du Parc Naturel du Fogo.

There is one sure thing: The eruption continues, but its intensity seems to be declining as only the northern branch of the lava flow seems to be active. Its progression is said to be about 25 metres per hour instead of 30-40 metres previously. However, the island is confronted with a critical situation in the Cha caldera where lava has destroyed several buildings in the village of Portela, including the headquarters of the Fogo Natural Park.
