Etna (Sicile / Italie): Nouveau paroxysme du Cratère Sud-Est!

   Le Nouveau Cratère SE a de nouveau connu une crise éruptive ce soir entre 18 heures et 20 heures environ. Le paroxysme a été plus bref que le précédent mais particulièrement violent, comme on peut le voir sur les webicorders . La visibilité n’était pas suffisamment bonne pour faire des observations intéressantes. La capture d’écran de la webcam L.A.V.E. ci-dessous, réalisée à 20 heures, montre toutefois que des fontaines de lave ont jailli du sommet et que des coulées ont  commencé à descendre le long du versant SE du cône.

   The New SE Crater went through a new eruptive episode this evening between 18:00 and 20:00 or so. The paroxysm did not last very long but was violent, as can be seen on the webicorders. Visibility was not good enough to make good observations. However, the screenshot of the L.A.V.E. webcam at 20:00 shows that lava fountains were active at the summit and that lava flows had started travelling down the SE slope of the cone.

Etna (Sicile / Italie): Nouveau paroxysme au Nouveau Cratère SE ! // Another paroxysm at the New SE Crater !

   Moins de 24 heures après le dernier paroxysme, le Cratère SE est à nouveau entré en éruption cette nuit. Le tremor et les webcams montrent que l’activité a commencé un peu avant minuit et s’est poursuivie jusque tôt ce matin. Comme précédemment, on a assisté à un spectacle de fontaines de lave de plusieurs centaines de mètres de hauteur qui a cessé vers 2h40. En revanche, l’activité effusive à partir d’une nouvelle bouche au pied du cône s’est poursuivie jusque vers 6 heures du matin. Comme précédemment, la lave a avancé vers la Valle del Bove.

 

   Less than 24 hours after the previous paroxysm, the SE Crater erupted again during the night. The tremor and the webcams show that activity started a little before midnight and continued until early this morning. Just like yesterday, there were lava fountains several hundred metres high which stopped at 02:40 or so. Meantime, the effusive activity from a new vent at the base of the cone continued until about 6 o’clock this morning. Like before, lava travelled down the Valle del Bove.

Etna (Sicile / Italie): Premier paroxysme 2013 au Nouveau Cratère SE ! // First 2013 paroxysm at the New SE Crater !

   Après une petite activité strombolienne somme toute habituelle au cours de la nuit, le Nouveau Cratère SE (NCSE) a connu un très important épisode de fontaines de lave vers 5 heures du matin, accompagnées de coulées qui se sont déversées sur la paroi occidentale de la Valle del Bove avant de s’arrêter vers 2600 mètres d’altitude, juste au nord de la Sierra Giannicola Piccola. Une volumineuse colonne de cendre a également pu être observée. Selon le site EtnaWalk, « les fontaines de lave avaient leur origine dans plusieurs bouches alignées selon une direction est-ouest et elles ont atteint par moment environ mille mètres de hauteur ». L’épisode éruptif est maintenant terminé. Voici une capture d’écran de la webcam LAVE pendant d’une des phases les plus intenses de ce paroxysme.

Cette dernière vidéo permet de se rendre compte que les fontaines de lave sont loin des mille mètres de hauteur mentionnés sur le site Etna Walk. Deux cents ou trois cents mètres me semblent suffisants. La Sicile se rapprocherait-elle de Marseille?

 

   After several hours of the usual strombolian activity, the New SE Crater went through an intense episode of lava fountaining at about 5 o’clock this morning, with lava flows that travelled down the western slope of the Valle del Bove and stopped at about 2,600 m a.s.l., just above the Sierra Giannicola Piccola. A voluminous ash plume was also observed.  According to the EtnaWalk website, “the lava fountains originated from several vents aligned east-west and sometimes reached a height of 1,000 metres or so”. The eruptive episode is now over. Here is a screenshot of the LAVE webcam during an intense episode of the paroxysm.

Watching this video, one can see the height of the lava fountains is far from the 1,000 metres mentioned on the EtnaWalk website. They probably reached 200 or 300 metres, not more. Is Sicily moving close to Marseilles?
