Reading the OVPF bulletins about the eruption of Piton de la Fournaise, one almost gets the impression that the Kilauea hotspot in Hawaii has pumped all the lava from the Reunion volcano and leaves it a few Pele’s tears as a consolation! The tremor is steadily declining, but the agony of the current eruption is fairly long. The lava output is so low that it can no longer be measured from space. It should be noted that at the same time the inflation of the volcanic edifice has resumed. We should not have to wait very long to watch a new eruption…

// Things are getting heated on Reunion Island !

——————————————

The Journal de l’Ile de la Réunion has published a very interesting article that highlights the difficulty of public access to an active eruptive site. For the moment, the Enclos Fouqué is closed as soon as an eruption begins. To allow tourists and the local population to have a closer look at the eruptions of Piton de la Fournaise, one solution would be to accompany them safely under the guidance of competent guides. It’s been a long time since this hypothesis has been mentioned, but the Préfet dragged his feet. Today, mountain guides are losing patience and call on the Préfet to give the go-ahead to accompany tourists on eruptive sites. They threaten to take action in the coming days.

Since April 27th 2018, the show of the eruption of Piton de la Fournaise is taking place in camera. Maintained at a safe distance, the public is only allowed to watch the eruption from Piton Bert in order to try to see a little lava. The closure has even become total: no more accreditation is granted by the Prefecture to go down in the Enclos Fouqué. It is therefore illegally, and with the risk of not being insured in case of accident, that some enthusiasts get closer to the eruption. Without them, there would be no images in the media, on social media, and in local and national TV news. These observations are also useful for the scientific work of the Volcano Observatory.
Presented as the number one tourist attraction of Reunion Island, the volcano is totally padlocked. According to information obtained by the Journal de l’Ile, a team of the Spanish television managed to get into the Enclos by climbing over the entrance gate last week and could make a report on the eruption. Broadcast in Spain, it could bring tourists to Reunion, but they would need to have access to the volcano!
Between prohibiting and opening everything, the Préfet had opened a door saying he was in favor of a secure accompaniment, with the resumption of a project initiated in 2010 by the National Union of Mountain Guides. In the wake of the Préfet’s words, 47 guides attended a training session in early 2017, funded by the Region, and got equipped accordingly. The investment was estimated at an average of 2,500 euros per guide. A test phase was set up during the eruption of July 2017. The Prefecture judged the project « realistic » but could not fully validate it because some points remained to be improved, in particular in terms of radio coverage. Two new successful simulations were conducted in March 2018 and only the green light of the State is missing.

The day after the start of the current eruption, an email was sent to the Prefecture requesting permission to activate the accompaniment. The guides are still waiting for the answer! If it is still controversial – tourists would have to pay – the project would lead groups of 8 people into the Enclos, up to 80 people maximum per rotation, about 200 metres from the eruptive site.
Since the beginning of the eruption, the initiators of the project have been overwhelmed by calls from locals and tourists. Today, they are losing patience. If nothing is done, they promise to take action in the coming days.
The ban on access to the volcano has repercussions as far as the metropolis. Specialized in the rapid organization of « special eruption » trips, the agency Aventure et Volcans will continue to « boycott Reunion Island as long as access to the volcano is not allowed, as was promised many times at various tourism fairs » , wrote Tanguy de Saint-Cyr, its manager, on social networks. This will delight Hawaii and other volcanic destinations around the world.

As I put it a few days ago, the eruption of Piton de la Fournaise in going on at a slow pace in the Enclos Fouqué. The tremor is at a low level but, as Robert Lamoureux would have said, the duck is still alive!

Here are three nice photos taken in the Enclos by Christian Holveck I thank warmly (which is quite normal on an active volcano!)

The eruption that started on April 27th, 2018 continues quietly inside the Enclos. Of course, it cannot be compared with what is happening in Hawaii. On the Reunion Island, no home is threatened by lava, which is very different from the situation on the Big Island.
The intensity of the tremor has been relatively low but stable over the past days. Activity is mainly in tunnels and the output of the surface klava flows can no longer be estimated from satellite data.
CO2 concentrations in the ground at the summit and in the Plains region remain high.
Inflation of the edifice seems to be picking up again. This parameter will be confirmed in the coming days.
No volcano-tectonic earthquake has been recorded during the last 24 hours under the Piton de la Fournaise.
