Etna (Sicile): Nouvel épisode éruptif ! // New eruptive episode !

11h45: Une séquence éruptive vient de débuter dans le Nouveau Cratère Sud-Est (NCSE) de l’Etna. Les webcams montrent de volumineux panaches tandis que la caméra thermique fait apparaître une belle fontaine de lave qui donne naissance à une coulée. Très logiquement, le tremor monte en flèche. L’INGV indique qu’une nouvelle fracture s’est ouverte dans la partie basse du versant sud du NCSE.  La couleur de l’alerte aérienne est passée au Rouge.

21 heures : L’épisode éruptif qui a commencé ce matin avec l’ouverture d’une nouvelle bouche sur le Nouveau Cratère Sud-Est continue ce soir, mais le tremor semble décliner, ce qui pourrait annoncer la fin prochaine de cet événement.  En attendant, la webcam Skyline montre que la lave s’écoule en abondance le long du versant méridional du NCSE, ainsi qu’une petite activité strombolienne au sommet du cratère. Au plus fort de la crise, à la mi journée, une séquence explosive particulièrement intense a généré un panache de cendre qui s’est élevé jusqu’à 7,5 km d’altitude.

22h30 : Contrairement à ce que l’on aurait pu imaginer, le tremor a cessé de décliner et l’éruption s’est stabilisée à un niveau relativement élevé. Il est bon de rappeler qu’une fracture s’est ouverte ce matin à la base du Nouveau Cratère Sud-Est. Une coulée de lave bien alimentée s’échappe de la fracture et avance sur le versant sud du volcan, en direction des monts Barbagallo et Frumento Supino. Le front de coulée le plus avancé a atteint ce soir l’altitude 2 600 mètres.

Suite à une réunion avec les autorités compétentes, la Protection Civile a décidé de faire passer le niveau d’alerte du volcan Vert à Jaune.

11:45: An eruptive episode has just started in Mt Etna’s New South-East Crater (NSEC). The webcams show a voluminous ash plume while the thermal camera shows a nice lava fountain that gives birth to a lava flow. Quite normally, the tremor is increasing sharply. INGV indicates that a new eruptive fissure opened in the lower part of the southern flank of the NSEC.  The aviation colour code has beeen raised to Red.

21 :00 : The eruptive episode that started this morning with the opening of a new vent on the New South-East Crater is going on this evening but the tremor seems to be declining, which might be a sign that the event will soon be over. The Skyline webcam shows that lava is currently flowing profusely alonh the S flank of the NSEC. One can also see a minor strombolian activity at the summit of the crater. At the climax of the crisis, at midday or so, a very intense explosive sequence produced an ash plume that rose up to 7.5 km above sea level.

22:30: Contrary to what could have been imagined, the tremor has stopped declining and the eruption has stabilized at a relatively high level. It is worth remembering that a fissure opened this morning at the base of the New Southeast Crater. A well-fed lava flow escapes from the fissure and advances on the southern flank of the volcano, towards Mount Barbagallo and Monte Frumento Supino. The most advanced lava front reached this evening the altitude 2,600 metres.
After a meeting with the relevant authorities, the Civil Protection has decided to raise the volcanic alert level from Green to Yellow.
