Etna (Sicile / Italie): Premier paroxysme 2013 au Nouveau Cratère SE ! // First 2013 paroxysm at the New SE Crater !

   Après une petite activité strombolienne somme toute habituelle au cours de la nuit, le Nouveau Cratère SE (NCSE) a connu un très important épisode de fontaines de lave vers 5 heures du matin, accompagnées de coulées qui se sont déversées sur la paroi occidentale de la Valle del Bove avant de s’arrêter vers 2600 mètres d’altitude, juste au nord de la Sierra Giannicola Piccola. Une volumineuse colonne de cendre a également pu être observée. Selon le site EtnaWalk, « les fontaines de lave avaient leur origine dans plusieurs bouches alignées selon une direction est-ouest et elles ont atteint par moment environ mille mètres de hauteur ». L’épisode éruptif est maintenant terminé. Voici une capture d’écran de la webcam LAVE pendant d’une des phases les plus intenses de ce paroxysme.

Cette dernière vidéo permet de se rendre compte que les fontaines de lave sont loin des mille mètres de hauteur mentionnés sur le site Etna Walk. Deux cents ou trois cents mètres me semblent suffisants. La Sicile se rapprocherait-elle de Marseille?

 

   After several hours of the usual strombolian activity, the New SE Crater went through an intense episode of lava fountaining at about 5 o’clock this morning, with lava flows that travelled down the western slope of the Valle del Bove and stopped at about 2,600 m a.s.l., just above the Sierra Giannicola Piccola. A voluminous ash plume was also observed.  According to the EtnaWalk website, “the lava fountains originated from several vents aligned east-west and sometimes reached a height of 1,000 metres or so”. The eruptive episode is now over. Here is a screenshot of the LAVE webcam during an intense episode of the paroxysm.

Watching this video, one can see the height of the lava fountains is far from the 1,000 metres mentioned on the EtnaWalk website. They probably reached 200 or 300 metres, not more. Is Sicily moving close to Marseilles?

  L’activité strombolienne observée depuis le 13 février dans le Cratère SE continue en s’intensifiant ce matin, comme le montre le tremor éruptif. Les explosions projetaient déjà hier soir des matériaux incandescents au-dessus de la lèvre du cratère. L’épisode commence à décliner au moment où j’écris ces lignes.

   The strombolian activity that started on February 13th in the evening is going on and intensifying this morning, as can be seen on the eruptive tremor. Last night, the explosions ejected incandescent material above the crater rim. The episode is declining while I am writing these lines.

   On peut lire ce matin sur le site Etna Walk (http://www.etnawalk.it/News/Read/147) que le 13 février au soir (à partir de 19h10 environ) le Cratère SE a été le siège d’une petite activité strombolienne ponctuée d’explosions à intervalles variables et dont les projections ne dépassaient que rarement la lèvre du cratère. L’activité n’était pas visible du pied de l’Etna et le tremor n’a pas montré de variations significatives.

 

   One can read this morning on the Etna Walk website (http://www.etnawalk.it/News/Read/147) that on February 13th in the evening (at about 19:10) some slight strombolian activity started at the SE Crater with explosions whose ejections rarely went above the crater rim. This activity could not be seen from the villages at the foot of the volcano and the tremor did not show significant variations.

   Au vu du tremor éruptif et des images fournies par les webcams, il semble que l’Etna ait connu un nouvel épisode strombolien – probablement au niveau de la Bocca Nuova – hier soir entre 21h30 et 23 heures. Une fois encore, les conditions météo n’étaient pas optimales pour assister au spectacle. De plus, les sismos en ligne avaient décidé de cesser le travail.

 

   Judging from the eruptive tremor and the webcam images, it seems Mount Etna went through another strombolian episode last night between 21:30 and 23:00. Once again, the weather was not good enough to watch the show that probably took place within Bocca Nuova. Besides, the webicorders had decided to stop working.
