Is activity really declining?

drapeau anglaisCENAPRED’s latest reports show that activity at Popocatepetl is decreasing. The monitoring system registered episodes of low-frequency and low amplitude tremor that was accompanied by persistent emission of a column of water vapour, gases and small amounts of ash. Several explosive events increased the emission of gas and ash. Additionally, a 1.9 magnitude volcanotectonic event was recorded. The high-frequency tremor has decreased slightly in amplitude (see seismogram below).
An overflight of the volcano has revealed that the activity of the last few days resulted in the formation of a new lava dome approximately 250 metres in diameter within the crater (http://www.cenapred.gob.mx/popo/2013/jul/p0707134.jpg)

drapeau anglais   7:00: The tremor kept rising during the night together with an increase in seismicity. The glow remained visible all night on the images provided by the L.A.V.E.webcam. Unfortunately, poor weather conditions don’t allow to see anything this morning. Is it a mere intensification of strombolian activity or the signs of a new paroxysm? The next few hours will tell us.

11:30: After a slight drop this morning, the tremor is again on the rise. Judging from the seismographs, there is little doubt that a new paroxysm will occur at the SE crater. Unfortunately the weather is bad, and unless the sky clears up at the last minute, the event will remain virtually invisible. Only the villages that will be under the fallout of ash and lapilli will realise that Etna is still alive!

Is there the emission of a lava flow? Let’s wait for dusk and then night. Some glow somewhere might help us understand the situation.

Etna (Sicile / Italie)

10:45: The tremor is increasing sharply (it started at 10:15-10:30, local time) but there is nothing to be seen on the webcams as fog is shrouding the summit area of Mount Etna. A new strombolian episode has probably started within Bocca Nuova or the NSE Crater where incandescence could be seen last night.

12:00: The tremor has now reached its highest point and has started decreasing; so has seismicity. Let’s wait for INGV’s report to know where Mount Etna erupted so discreetly.

14:00: Boris Behncke (INGV Catania) told me that the INGV seismographs clearly showed that the strombolian episode took place within Bocca Nuova and that the New SE Crater went through increased activity at the same time.

22:00: Here is the message Boris Behncke (INGV Catania) sent me tonight about today’s eruptive episode on Mount Etna : « That was the Bocca Nuova once more, which had a brief, intense episode of Strombolian activity and presumably lava fountains today. Again, there was weak Strombolian activity at the New Southeast Crater for more than 12 hours before the Bocca Nuova episode. Visibility was zero, but thanks to the seismic and infrasound networks in Etna’s summit area, it was quite easy to distinguish the site of the activity (a smaller and equally invisible episode on 20 January was attributed to the New Southeast Crater thanks mostly to infrasound data).

For those of you watching the tremor, if you see a stronger increase at the station « EBEL » (Etna Belvedere) as compared to « ECPN » (Etna Caldera del Piano), then it’s the New Southeast Crater erupting: « EBEL » stands just 700 m away. Vice versa, if « ECPN » shows a stronger amplitude (as it did today), then it’s the Bocca Nuova, which is closer to « ECPN » than to « EBEL ». »

Source: GNS Science.

It seems activity is changing at White Island. As I put it before, the small lake in the crater had been spewing mud and rock several tens of metres into the air in the past few days. However, scientists monitoring the volcano indicated this morning that the crater lake is drying out, although the ejections are still vigorous.
The continuous volcanic tremor at White Island has also changed to a pattern of intermittent tremor. When occurring, the volcanic tremor remains strong.
The current level of unrest means that there is a greater than usual hazard to visitors. Past monitoring shows that weak ash eruptions had often followed the drying out of the lake.
The volcanic alert level remains at one and the aviation colour code remains at Orange.
