Le président chilien Sebastián Piñera a annoncé le 5 mars 2022 la création d’un nouveau Parc naturel dans la région de Santiago, qui permettra de protéger 368 glaciers. Cette nouvelle zone protégée, située à 60 km de Santiago, couvre 75 000 hectares et permettra de protéger 46% des surfaces glacées de la région.

Avec le Parc naturel des Glaciers, le Chili va pouvoir protéger les glaciers qui contiennent une part estimée à 56% de l’eau emmagasinée dans la région où vivent plus de 7 des 18 millions de Chiliens.

En vertu du label “Parc national”, les glaciers protégés ne pourront être “ni altérés ni touchés ».

Plus de 7 millions de personnes vivent dans la région de Santiago, frappée comme le reste du pays par une sécheresse chronique. 2021 a marqué la 13ème année consécutive de sécheresse et a été la 4ème année la plus chaude depuis1950.

Le Chili abrite 80% des glaciers d’Amérique latine et fait partie des dix pays possédant la plus grande masse glaciaire au monde, avec notamment le Canada, les États-Unis, la Chine et la Russie

Chilean President Sebastián Piñera announced on March 5th, 2022 the creation of a new Natural Park in the Santiago region, which will protect 368 glaciers. This new protected area, located 60 km from Santiago, covers 75,000 hectares and will protect 46% of the region’s frozen surfaces.
With the Glaciers Natural Park, Chile will be able to protect the glaciers which contain an estimated 56% of the water stored in the region where more than 7 of the 18 million Chileans live.
Under the “National Park” label, the protected glaciers cannot be “neither altered nor touched”.
More than 7 million people live in the Santiago region, hit like the rest of the country by chronic drought. 2021 marked the 13th consecutive year of drought and was the 4th hottest year since 1950.
Chile is home to 80% of Latin America’s glaciers and is one of the ten countries with the largest glacier mass in the world, including Canada, the United States, China and Russia.
