Quelques nouvelles du Stromboli (Sicile)

On a de nouveau observé aujourd’hui 7 juillet 2024 une intensification de l’activité effusive sur la
Sciara del Fuoco, avec une coulée de lave bien alimentée émise par deux bouches situées à une altitude de 485 mètres. La lave atteint la littoral en formant un petit delta. Le contact avec la mer génère un nuage de vapeur. Des blocs continuent de se détacher de la coulée ; ils roulent le long de la Sciara et provoquent de petites explosions phréatiques.
L’amplitude moyenne du signal sismique est stable à des valeurs moyennes-basses jusqu’à
vers 10h25 UTC, avant de montrer un pic au-dessus des valeurs moyennes.

Today, July 7th, 2024, there was a new increase in the effusive activity on the Sciara del Fuoco, with a well-fed lava flow emitted from two vents located at 485 m above sea level. Lava reaches the coastline forming a small delta. Its contact with the sea generates a steam cloud. Blocks continue to break away from the flow; they roll along the Sciara and cause small phreatic explosions.
The average amplitude of the seismic signal was stable at medium-low values until around 10:25 UTC, before showing a peak above average values.

Le Stromboli (Sicile) s’agite de nouveau // New unrest at Stromboli (Sicily)

Alors que l’on parle de rendre l’accès au Stromboli moins restrictif, le volcan rappelle qu’il est loin d’être inoffensif. Le 24 mars à 01h10 (heure locale), l’INGV a émis un bulletin signalant l’apparition d’une coulée de lave au niveau de la zone cratèrique Nord. Comme les fois précédentes, la lave a commencé à avancer le long de la Sciara del Fuoco.

Le 25 mars à 16h30, un nouveau bulletin de l’INGV signalait une forte explosion dans la zone cratèrique Centre-Sud du Stromboli, visible sur les caméras de surveillance. L’événement a été suivi de deux explosions de moindre intensité. L’activité effusive se poursuivait au niveau la zone cratèrique Nord au moment de l’émission du bulletin. Le tremor a montré une hausse avant les explosions, avant de revenir au niveau des jours précédents.

While there is talk of making access to Stromboli less restrictive, the volcano reminds us that it is far from harmless. On March 24th at 01:10 (local time), INGV issued a bulletin announcing a lava flow at the North Crater area. Like previously, lava started flowing along the Sciara del Fuoco.

On March 25th at 4:30 p.m., a new INGV bulletin reported a strong explosion in the Center-South crater area of Stromboli, visible on surveillance cameras. The event was followed by two explosions of lesser intensity. The effusive activity was continuing at the North Crater area when the bulletin was issued. The tremor increased before the explosions, then returned to the level of the previous days.

Retour au calme sur le Stromboli (Sicile) // Situation back to normal on Stromboli (Sicily)

Comme le montre le tracé sismique ci-dessous, on observe en ce moment un retour au calme sur le Stromboli après l’événement du 9 octobre 2022. Plus qu’une intensification de l’activité explosive – qui n’apparaît pas sur les sismos – on a assisté à un effondrement partiel de la terrasse cratèrique nord.

Dans un premier temps, cet effondrement a généré une coulée pyroclastique très spectaculaire avec une importante quantité de matériaux qui a dévalé le long de la Sciara del Fuoco avant d’atteindre la mer où l’impact a provoqué un mini tsunami.

Cette évacuation de matériaux a été suivie d’une coulée de lave qui a emprunté le chenal tracé par la coulée pyroclastique.

Plusieurs vidéos réalisées à l’aide de drones et diffusées sur les réseaux sociaux ont permis de comprendre le déroulement de la situation.

Ce n’est pas la première fois qu’un effondrement se produit au niveau des cratères et entraîne le déferlement d’une importante quantité de matériaux. Ces derniers s’accumulent au pied de la Sciara del Fuoco, en majeure partie sous le niveau de la mer. La répétition de tels événements peut entraîner une déstabilisation et l’effondrement de la masse de matériaux accumulés en profondeur, en générant un tsunami, comme cela s’est produit, par exemple, à la fin de l’année 2002, avec des dégâts causés aux habitations sur le littoral.

A noter que les derniers événements n’ont pas changé les modalités d’accès au volcan: jusqu’à 290 m d’altitude librement et jusqu’à 400 m avec accompagnement obligatoire des guides.

As shown in the seismic plot below, the situation is back to normal on Stromboli after the event of October 9th, 2022. More than an intensification of explosive activity – which does not appear on the seismographs – there was a partial collapse of the northern crater terrace.
Initially, this collapse generated a very spectacular pyroclastic flow with a large quantity of material which tumbled down the Sciara del Fuoco before reaching the sea where the impact caused a mini tsunami.
This evacuation of materials was followed by a lava flow which travelled along the channel dug by the pyroclastic flow.
Several videos made using drones and released on social networks have made it possible to understand the unfolding of the situation.
This is not the first time that a collapse has occurred at the craters and caused the surge of a large quantity of material. These accumulate at the foot of the Sciara del Fuoco, mostly below sea level. The repetition of such events can lead to the destabilization and the collapse of the mass of materials accumulated at depth, generating a tsunami, as happened, for example, at the end of 2002, with damage to homes on the coast.

It should be noted that the latest events have not changed the access rules to the volcano: up to 290 freely and up to 400 m with the compulsory accompaniement of the guides.

Nouvelle hausse d’activité du Stromboli (Sicile) // New increase in activity of Stromboli (Sicily)

L’INGV indique qu’une succession de coulées pyroclastiques a été observée en début de matinée le 9 octobre 2022 sur le Stromboli. Par la suite, une coulée de lave bien alimentée a atteint la côte après avoir dévalé la Sciara del Fuoco. L’événement a été très spectaculaire, comme on peut le voir sur les vidéos ci-dessous :

L’activité explosive ne montre pas de variations importantes. Du point de vue sismique, à partir de 06:24 (UTC), en relation avec les coulées pyroclastiques, on a observé une augmentation de l’amplitude du tremor qui a atteint un niveau élevé avant de retrouver un niveau moyen.. Il n’y a pas de déformation significative de l’édifice volcanique.

Dernière minute : La Protection Civile a ordonné le passage du niveau d’alerte du Stromboli de jaune à Orange suite à une réunion avec les instances scientifiques. Le déclenchement de ce nouveau niveau d’alerte suppose le renforcement du système de surveillance du volcan et du lien d’information entre la communauté scientifique et les structures opérationnelles du Service National de la Protection Civile. La population de l’île est invitée à se tenir informée et à suivre strictement les indications fournies par les autorités locales de Protection Civile.
La réunion mentionnée ci-dessus a été convoquée « à la lumière de l’activité volcanique actuelle, avec le début d’une phase éruptive avec coulée pyroclastique émise depuis la zone du cratère Nord qui a rapidement parcouru la Sciara del Fuoco pour atteindre la mer, générant un effondrement de la terrasse cratèrique, suivi d’un remarquable débordement de lave ».

INGV indicates that several pyroclastic flows were observed in the early morning of October 9th, 2022 on Stromboli. Subsequently, a well-fed lava flow reached the coast after travelling down the Sciara del Fuoco.The event was very spectacular, as can be seen on the videos above.

The explosive activity does not show significant variations. From a seismic point of view, from 06:24 (UTC), in relation to the pyroclastic flows, an increase in the amplitude of the tremor was observed. It reached a high level before returning to an average level. There is no significant deformation of the volcanic edifice.

Last minute: The Civil Protection has raised the alert level for Stromboli from yellow to Orange following a meeting with the scientific authorities. The triggering of this new alert level includes the strengthening of the volcano monitoring system and the information link between the scientific community and the operational structures of the Civil Protection Service. The population of the island is invited to keep informed and to strictly follow the indications provided by the local Civil Protection authorities.
The aforementioned meeting was convened « in light of the current volcanic activity, with the beginning of an eruptive phase with pyroclastic flow emitted from the area of ​​the North crater that quickly travelled the Sciara del Fuoco to reach the sea , generating a collapse of the crater terrace, followed by a remarkable lava overflow ».
