En lisant le site web Iceland Review du 26 mai 2014, on apprend que la compagnie islandaise de développement géothermique Reykjavík Geothermal et l’Union Africaine ont signé ce même jour un contrat de 5,8 millions d’euros qui autorise Reykjavik Geothermal a commencer un forage en Ethiopie dans la Rift Valley dans le cadre de la construction de deux centrales de 500 mégawatts. L’énergie produite par ces centrales sera vendue à la compagnie d’électricité de l’état éthiopien Ethiopian Electric Power.

Le financement est assuré par le Ministère du Développement allemand, le Fonds Africain de l’Union Européenne, et la Banque Allemande de Développement.

L’article ne précise pas le lieu du forage. Il faut seulement espérer qu’il ne contribuera pas à dénaturer les extraordinaires couleurs du site de Dallol ! Mais vous le savez comme moi, l’argent passe bien avant  la Nature !

Reading the Iceland Review website of May 26th 2014, we learn that Reykjavík Geothermal and the African Union signed on that very day a 5.8-million euro contract allowing Reykjavík Geothermal to start drilling in the Ethiopian Rift Valley as part of two 500 MW power plants under construction. The energy produced by the power plants will be sold to the state electrical company Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP).

The money comes from the Ministry of Development in Germany, the European Union African Fund, and the German Development Bank.

The article does not say where the drilling will take place. We must just hope that the marvellous colours of Dallol will not be spoilt by this initiative. Unfortunately, big money leaves Nature behind!
