Eruption hydrothermale au lac Rotorua (Nouvelle Zélande) // Hydrothermal eruption at Lake Rotorua (New Zealand)

Une éruption hydrothermale s’est produite dans le Lac Rotorua à 03h30 (heure locale) le 27 novembre 2016. Elle a entraîné l’évacuation d’au moins une maison sur la berge du lac. Selon GeoNet, on n’avait pas observé ce style d’éruption – qualifiée d’ « anormale » – à Rotorua depuis 2000 ou 2001. Le geyser avait une hauteur d’une trentaine de mètres. Une habitante du village d’Ohinemuta a déclaré qu’elle avait entendu sept bruits sourds suivis d’un bouillonnement. D’autres habitants du village ont, eux aussi, été réveillés le bruit provoqué par l’éruption.

On a déjà observé de telles éruptions dans le Lac Rotorua dans le passé, surtout pendant l’exploitation du système géothermal. Toutefois, de tels événements étaient rares depuis l’arrêt du forage en 1987.

A hydrothermal eruption was observed at Lake Rotorua at 03:30 (local time) on November 27^th, prompting an evacuation of at least one house near the lake.  According to GeoNet, the style of the eruption was one which hadn’t been seen in Rotorua since about 2000 or 2001 and was slightly anomalous. The geyser was reportedly as high as 30 metres. A resident reported six or seven loud thuds followed by spraying sound. There were several reports of the eruption from people living in Ohinemutu Village, on the edge of the lake, who had been woken by the noise.

The occurrence of steam eruptions has been variable in Rotorua, with many during the exploitation of the geothermal system, however they declined after the bore closure in 1987.
