Surveillance accrue du Turrialba (Costa Rica) // Increased monitoring of Turrialba volcano (Costa Rica)

drapeau francaisLa sismicité reste élevée sur le Turrialba, ce qui laisse supposer que de nouveaux événements éruptifs pourraient avoir lieu dans un proche avenir. Les géologues de l’OVSICORI ont installé un réseau géodésique afin de détecter les mouvements horizontaux et verticaux de l’édifice volcanique. Ils indiquent que la situation actuelle peut être considérée comme calme, mais les mesures suggèrent que ce calme pourrait être rompu à tout moment car « une quantité imortante de gaz et de magma circule à l’intérieur du volcan ».

Quatre écoles situées à proximité de volcan restent fermées en raison de la forte concentration de cendre volcanique. Six centres de santé publique sont prêts à fournir des soins d’urgence et des représentants de la Croix-Rouge forment leurs bénévoles sur les protocoles d’évacuation. Le Président Luis Guillermo Solis a annulé un voyage en Europe en raison des éruptions de la semaine dernière. Il a expliqué lors d’une récente conférence de presse qu’il ne souhaite pas se rendre dans la région du Turrialba afin d’éviter les spéculations des médias.

Le niveau d’alerte Jaune reste en place sur le Turrialba et les touristes ne sont pas autorisés à entrer dans dans le parc national.

OVSICORI geologists installed a geodesic network in order to detect the horizontal and vertical movements of the volcanic edifice. They indicate the current situation can be perceived as calm, but that measurements suggest that this calm could be shattered at any moment due to the « heavy flow of gases and magma and volcanic matter inside the volcano »..

Four schools close to volcano remain closed due to the heavy concentration of volcanic ash. Six public health clinics stand ready to provide emergency care, and Red Cross officials are training their volunteers on evacuation protocols. President Luis Guillermo Solis cancelled a trip to Europe due to the eruptions last week, but he explained during a recent press conference that he does not wish to visit the Turrialba volcano in order to avoid speculation by news media outlets.

No national emergency has been issued, but a yellow alert remains in place and tourists are not allowed in the national park.

drapeau francaisLe Turrialba a connu le 12 mars une nouvelle séquence éruptive avec un volumineux panache de gaz et de cendre émis à partir de la bouche à l’intérieur du cratère. L’éruption a duré environ 24 minutes et le panache de cendre a atteint une hauteur estimée à 500 mètres. Selon l’OVSICORI, l’éruption du 12 mars a été plus intense que celle qui avait eu lieu le week-end précédent.

Il a été fait état de retombées de cendre sans les provinces de San José et Heredia. Un avion de la compagnie American Airlines en provenance de Dallas a dû faire demi-tour car la cendre émise par le volcan ne permettait pas l’atterrissage à San José.

drapeau anglaisA new ash, vapour and gas explosion shook Turrialba Volcano on March 12th at 10:50 a.m.

The vent in the crater spewed materials for about 24 minutes and reached some 500 metres above the crater’s summit. A series of volcanic tremors in the surroundings of Turrialba canton followed the explosion which had a greater magnitude than those recorded the weekend before.

There are reports of ash on the roofs, windows and cars as far as the provinces of San José and Heredia. An American Airlines plane had to go back to Dallas because volcanic ash prevented its landing in San José airport.

Nouvelles explosions au Turrialba (Costa Rica)

drapeau francaisAprès deux semaines de calme relative, le Turrialba a été secoué dimanche par quatre nouvelles explosions. L’OVSICORI les a enregistrées à 13h41, 14h45, 15h05 et 15h17. La première explosion a généré un panache de cendre d’environ 500 mètres de hauteur tandis que les suivantes produisaient des nuages de cendre et de vapeur qui montaient à environ 300 mètres au-dessus du cratère.

drapeau anglaisFollowing two weeks of low activity, the Turrialba volcano on Sunday was shaken by four explosions that were recorded by OVSICORI at 1:41 p.m., 2:45 p.m., 3:05 p.m. and 3:17 p.m.

The first explosion formed an ash plume that reached some 500 metres above the volcano’s summit. The other explosions also spewed vapour and ash into the air and formed fumaroles of some 300 metres.

Costa Rica: Nouveau réveil du Turrialba // Turrialba starts erupting again

drapeau francaisLe Turrialba a connu une nouvelle crise éruptive lundi soir et a émis encore plus de cendre que pendant l’éruption des 29 et 30 octobre derniers. Les cantons de Turrialba et Alvarado restent en alerte Jaune.

Selon les volcanologues locaux, l’éruption a débuté à 21h24 et le volcan a rejeté deux fois plus de cendre qu’à la fin du mois d’octobre, avec des retombées jusqu’à une vingtaine de kilomètres de distance. Ces premières éruptions avaient entraîné l’effondrement d’une partie des parois du cratère, avec des retombées de cendre qui avaient recouvert le bétail, les habitations et les voitures à proximité.

Il n’y a probablement aucun lien entre l’éruption de lundi soir et le récent essaim sismique – avec un événement de M 6,8 – qui a secoué le SO du Costa Rica lundi en tout début de journée.

drapeau anglaisThe Turrialba Volcano erupted again on Monday evening, spewing even more ash into the air than during the October 30th eruption. The Yellow alert is still in effect for the cantons of Turrialba and Alvarado.

According to local volcanologists, the eruption started at 21:24 on Monday and sent twice as much ash than during the October 29th and 30th event. Ashfall was observed as far as 20 km away. Those initial eruptions caused part of the crater wall to collapse, loosening rock and ash that would later fall on livestock, cars and homes nearby.

It is unlikely that there is any connection between Monday evening’s eruption and the recent swarm of earthquakes felt in the capital recently, including an M 6.8 event that shook Costa Rica’s SW region in the early hours of Monday.
