On pourrait penser qu’il s’agit d’ un cratère volcanique, mais ce n’en est pas un. Le site, baptisé « Portes de l’Enfer », se trouve près de Darvaza, au Turkménistan, à environ 260 kilomètres au nord de la capitale, Achgabat.
Le cratère est né lorsqu’un forage de gaz a mal tourné en 1971; le sol s’est effondré, formant le cratère. Il mesure environ 60 mètres de diamètre et 20 mètres de profondeur. Pour empêcher la propagation du gaz, les géologues ont allumé un incendie. Ils pensaient que le gaz brûlerait pendant quelques semaines, mais il brûle depuis des décennies.
La photo ci-dessous a été prise en juillet 2020. Le cratère est un spectacle recherché par le petit nombre de touristes qui viennent au Turkménistan, un pays où il est difficile d’entrer.
Aujourd’hui, le président du Turkménistan demande de mettre terme au feu dans le cratère. Il a ordonné à son gouvernement de chercher des moyens de l’éteindre car il cause des dégâts à l’environnement et affecte la santé des personnes qui vivent dans la région.

It might look like a volcanic crater but it is not. The site named « Gates of Hell » lies near Darvaza, Turkmenistan. It is located about 260 kilometers north of the capital, Ashgabat.
The crater was born when a gas drilling went wrong in 1971 and the ground collapsed, forming the crater. It is about 60 meters in diameter and 20 meters deep. To prevent the spread of gas, geologists set a fire, expecting the gas to burn off in a few weeks, but it has burned for decades
The photo below was taken in July 2020. The crater is a popular sight for the small number of tourists who come to Turkmenistan, a country which is difficult to enter.
Today, the president of Turkmenistan is calling for an end to the blazing crater. He has ordered his government to look for ways to put the fire out because it is causing ecological damage and affecting the health of people living in the area.
