On le sentait venir car l’intensité des fontaines de lave avait diminué au cours des dernières heures (voir capture d’écran ci-dessous). Le HVO vient de m’informer que l’éruption dans l’Halema’uma’u s’est arrêtée vers 10h10 (heure locale). L’activité a fortement diminué vers 9h45 ce matin lorsque la fontaine qui jaillissait de la bouche nord et la coulée de lave qu’elle alimentait ont cessé de fonctionner. L’activité de la bouche sud a fortement diminué en même temps. La lave a continué à s’écouler pendant encore 20 minutes à un rythme beaucoup plus lent. Le tremor éruptif a diminué juste avant 10h10 et l’épisode de déflation qui avait accompagné le début de l’épisode 4 le 15 janvier dernier s’est inversé vers 10h00 et est maintenant en phase d’inflation. Avec ce retour de l’inflation, un 5ème épisode éruptif ne serait pas une surprise.

One could feel it come becase the intensity of the lava fountains had decreased in the past hours. HVO has just informed me that the eruption within Halema’uma’u Crater paused around 10:10 a.m. (local time). Activity greatly decreased at approximately 9:45 a.m. this morning when the north vent fountain and associated lava flow stopped erupting, and south vent activity greatly diminished at the same time. Lava continued to flow from south vent for another 20 minutes at a much reduced rate. The seismic tremor dropped just before 10:10 a.m. and the deflationary tilt that accompanied the start of Episode 4 on January 15^th reversed at about 10:00 a.m. and is now inflating. With the return of inflation, a 5^th eruptive episode would not come as a surprise.
