Piton de la Fournaise (Île de la Réunion) : poursuite de l’éruption // The eruption continues

L’éruption du Piton de la Fournaise a repris le 28 mars vers 15h (heure locale).Selon l’OVPF, l’activité ayant repris au niveau du même site éruptif, sans ouverture de nouvelle fissure ni injection de nouveau dyke, il s’agit d’une reprise de l’éruption débutée le 13 février 2026 et non d’une nouvelle éruption. J’avais expliqué qu’il s’agissait probablement de la vidange d’une poche résiduelle de magma. À noter qu’une légère inflation de l’édifice est enregistrée sur les 3 derniers jours, témoignant de la remise en pression du réservoir de magma superficiel. Cette inflation s’accompagne d’une légère hausse de la sismicité. L’intensité du trémor éruptif a augmenté progressivement en fin de journée le 28 mars, avant de stabiliser puis de ré-augmenter légèrement en début de journée le 29 mars.

L’Observatoire confirme les images des webcams le 28 mars au soir, à savoir le retour d’une coulée de lave sur les Grandes Pentes où seul le bras sud est de nouveau réalimenté.

On n’observe pas de réalimentation de la plate-forme littorale, mais un tel événement ne peut être exclu, ainsi qu’une intensification du panache de gaz au point d’entrée de la lave dans l’océan.

The eruption of Piton de la Fournaise resumed on March 28^th around 3:00 PM (local time). According to the OVPF, since the activity resumed at the same eruptive site, without the opening of a new fissure or the injection of a new dyke, this is a resumption of the eruption that began on February 13, 2026, and not a new eruption. I had explained that it was probably the emptying of a residual magma chamber. It should be noted that slight inflation of the volcano has been recorded over the last three days, indicating the repressurization of the shallow magma reservoir. This inflation is accompanied by a slight increase in seismicity. The intensity of the eruptive tremor gradually increased at the end of March 28^th, before stabilizing and then increasing slightly again at the beginning of March 29th.
The Observatory confirms the webcam images from the evening of March 28^th, namely the return of a lava flow on the Grandes Pentes, where only the southern arm is now being replenished.
No new activity is observed at the coastal platform, but such an event cannot be ruled out, nor can an intensification of the gas plume where the lava enters the ocean.
