L’excellente chaîne de télévision ARTE a diffusé en soirée le 9 mars 2019 un excellent documentaire intitulé « Le mystérieux volcan du Moyen Age ». Construit sur le mode du thriller, le film de 53 minutes entraîne le téléspectateur au cœur d’une enquête internationale sur un volcan mystérieux, berceau de l’une des plus grandes éruptions de ces dix mille dernières années.

Pendant plus de trente ans, des scientifiques du monde entier ont cherché le coupable. En vain. Ils savaient que l’éruption s’était déroulée vers la fin du Moyen Âge, au 13^ème siècle, et pensaient qu’elle avait probablement eu un impact significatif le climat de notre planète.

Au début des années 2010, le géomorphologue volcanique Franck Lavigne (que je salue ici) et le volcanologue Jean-Christophe Komorowski décident de reprendre les recherches. Emaillé de superbes images d’éruptions et de coulées pyroclastiques, de témoignages et d’images de synthèse, le film suit leur enquête. Les deux scientifiques finissent par découvrir le responsable de cette méga éruption. J’avais consacré plusieurs notes à cette recherche de la vérité sur ce blog le 16 juin et le 12 août 2012, le 2 octobre 2013 et le 26 février 2017. J’expliquais dans ce dernier article qu’une équipe scientifique internationale avait revu à la baisse l’impact de l’éruption cataclysmale du volcan au Moyen Age. Jalousie scientifique ? Certainement. On sent poindre dans le documentaire ARTE une certaine déception de Clive Oppenheimer qui aurait bien voulu être le découvreur du volcan mystère. Pas de chance, les Français étaient déjà passés par là….

Built in a thriller mode, the 53-minute film takes the viewer to the heart of an international investigation into a mysterious volcano, the cradle of one of the greatest eruptions of the last ten thousand years.
For more than thirty years, scientists around the world have been looking for the culprit. In vain. They knew that the eruption occurred in the late Middle Ages, in the 13^th century, and thought that it probably had a significant impact on our planet’s climate.
In early 2010, geomorphologist Franck Lavigne (whom I greet here) and volcanologist Jean-Christophe Komorowski decided to resume the research work. With great images of eruptions and pyroclastic flows, testimonials and computer-generated images, the film follows their investigation. The two scientists eventually discovered the volcano responsible for this mega eruption. I had devoted several posts to the search for the truth on this blog on June 16^th and August 12^th, 2012, October 2^nd, 2013 and February 26^th, 2017. I explained in this last article that an international scientific team had reviewed the impact of the cataclysmal eruption of the volcano in the Middle Ages. Was it scientific jealousy? Certainly. In the ARTE documentary, one can feel some disappointment with Clive Oppenheimer who would have liked to be the discoverer of the mystery volcano. Hard luck, the French had already been there ….
