White Island est une île volcanique active située dans la partie nord-est de la Bay of Plenty (Baie de l’Abondance) en Nouvelle-Zélande.
Le 9 décembre 2019, le volcan est entré en éruption et a envoyé une déferlante roches, de cendres et de sédiments chauffés à haute température.

14 Australiens, cinq Américains, deux Néo-Zélandais et un Allemand ont été tués pendant l’éruption. De nombreuses autres personnes ont subi des blessures horribles,. Il a fallu mettre rapidement sur pied une opération médicale à grande échelle. Les victimes ont été prises en charge par des unités de soins pour grands brûlés à travers la Nouvelle-Zélande et l’Australie. Il y avait 47 touristes sur White Island lorsque l’éruption volcanique s’est produite. L’île appartient aux frères Andrew, James et Peter Buttle, gestionnaires de la compagnie Whakaari Management Limited (WML).
Six parties, dont deux voyagistes et la WML, ont été accusées d’avoir enfreint les règles de santé et de sécurité avant la catastrophe. Selon les procureurs, les touristes n’ont reçu aucune mise en garde de santé et de sécurité avant de débarquer sur White Island. L’un des procureurs a déclaré : « L’activité touristique sur White Island était une entreprise risquée. Elle supposait la visite d’un volcan actif en conduisant les gens au cœur du cratère dans des circonstances où personne ne pouvait prévoir quand une éruption pourrait se produire. Tout le monde sait que le moment de cette éruption ne pouvait être prévu… mais il était prévisible qu’elle puisse survenir à un moment ou un autre. » Le procureur a fait valoir que la société propriétaire du volcan n’avait pas compris le risque.
Six sociétés, dont White Island Tours, qui a transporté par bateau vers le site volcanique 21 des personnes tuées, ont déjà plaidé coupable. Chacune des sociétés jugées encourt une amende maximale équivalente à 840 000 euros. Chacun des propriétaires de l’île encourt une amende maximale de 170 000 euros. .
Suite à la catastrophe, les touristes ne sont plus autorisés à visiter l’île.

White Island is an active volcanic island in New Zealand’s northeastern Bay of Plenty region.

Here is a video shot by one of the personns on the island at the time of the eruption. On December 9^th, 2019, the volcano erupted, releasing a high temperature plume of rock and ash in the air.

In total, 14 Australians, five Americans, two New Zealanders and one German were killed. Many more people suffered horrific injuries, prompting a massive medical operation that saw victims treated in burns units across New Zealand and Australia. There were 47 tourists on White Island when the volcanic eruption happened. The island was owned by the brothers Andrew, James and Peter Buttle under Whakaari Management Limited (WML).

Six parties, including two tour companies and the WML, have been charged with breaching health and safety regulations in the lead-up to the disaster. According to the prosecutors, the tourists received no health and safety warning before they landed on White Island.  One of the prosecutors said : « The business of tourism on White Island was a risky business. It involved tours to an active volcano, taking people to the heart of the crater in circumstances where no one could predict when an eruption might occur. No one is suggesting that the timing of this eruption could have been predicted… but it was foreseeable that it may erupt at some point. » The prosecutor argued that the company that owned the volcano failed to understand the risk.

Six companies, including White Island Tours, which ferried 21 of those killed to the volcanic site by boat, have already pleaded guilty. Each of the companies on trial faces a maximum fine of 840,000 euros. Each of the brothers charged faces a maximum fine of 170,000 euros. .

Following the disaster, tourists are no longer allowed to visit the island.
