Il fait ce matin un temps superbe sur l’Etna. Seul un petit panache fumerollien s’échappe du sommet du Cratère SE. Selon l’INGV, les émissions de cendres noires observées hier sont le résultat d’effondrements à l’intérieur de ce cratère. La lave continue à s’écouler dans la Valle del Bove, mais le débit a considérablement faibli au cours des dernières heures. Par contre, la coulée qui s’échappe du versant sud de la Bocca Nuova est bien alimentée, avec un débit estimé entre un et trois mètres cubes par seconde. La coulée a parcouru environ 2 km en direction du sud-ouest où elle n’a pas encore atteint la végétation. Le tremor éruptif a retrouvé un niveau normal.

The weather is very nice this morning on Mount Etna. Only a small plume of white vapour is coming out of the SE Crater. According to the INGV, yesterday’s black ash clouds were generated by collapses inside the vent. Lava is still flowing into the Valle del Bove but the output is lower than before. Meantime, the lava flow on the southern flank of the Bocca Nuova is still well-fed, with an output estimated between 1 and 3 cubic metres per second. It has covered 2 km or so but has not yet reached the vegetation. The eruptive tremor is normal at a low level.

Depuis cette nuit, le Cratère SE émet de volumineux nuages de cendres noires. Ce matin, il y a beaucoup de vent sur le sommet et les nuages de cendre et de poussière gênent la visibilité. Apparemment, la situation n’a guère évolué depuis hier. La coulée dans la Valle del Bove est moins incandescente. Elle est peut-être moins alimentée, ou bien s’écoule davantage en canaux et tunnels. Le tremor eruptif est à un niveau relativement bas ce matin, mais l’expérience prouve que l’humeur du volcan est très changeante en ce moment!

Since that night, the SE Crater emits voluminous black ashclouds. There is a lot of wind on the summit this morning so that the clouds of ash and dust prevent us from having a good view of what’s happening up there. The situation doesn’t seem to have changed a lot since yesterday. The lava flow in the Valle del Bove is less incandescent. The reason may be that it is not so well fed, or that more lava is flowing in channels or tunnels. The eruptive tremor is low this morning, but we know that the situation may change at any moment!

Situation stable ce matin sur le volcan. Dans son dernier rapport, l’INGV de Catane indique qu’hier plusieurs épisodes d’activité strombolienne ont accompagné les émissions de cendres que je signalais dans mon dernier bulletin. Par ailleurs, les scientifiques indiquent que l’émission de lave a repris au niveau de la bouche qui s’est ouverte le 26 octobre à 3000 m d’altitude sur le flanc sud de la Bocca Nuova. Cela explique donc l’anomalie thermique que j’avais détectée hier matin sur la télécaméra.

The situation is stable this morning on the volcano. In its latest report, the INGV of Catania indicates that several episodes of strombolian activity accompanied the ash emissions I mentioned in my latest bulletin. Besides, the scientists inform us that lava is flowing again from the vent that opened on October 26th at 3000 m a.s.l. on the southern flank of the Bocca Nuova, which accounts for the thermal anomaly I had detected yesterday morning on the telecamera.

7h30: Bien que l’INGV n’en fasse pas état, il semble bien, au vu des images données par la télécaméra thermique, qu’il y ait à nouveau ce matin une anomalie sur le versant sud de la Bocca Nuova. Dans le même temps, la lave continue à s’écouler tranquillement dans la Valle del Bove. Le sommet du cratère SE montre un dégazage relativement important mais, comme je l’ai déjà écrit plusieurs fois, il faut prendre ce paramètre avec prudence, car il est lié au degré d’hygrométrie de l’air ambiant.
19h30: L’anomalie thermique a disparu en cours de journée. Ce soir, la situation sur le volcan est globalement calme, avec seulement la coulée qui se maintient dans la Valle del Bove. En cours de journée, on a observé des émissions sporadiques de cendres au sommet du Cratère SE.

7:30: Although the INGV does not mention it, there seems to be a thermal anomaly on the southern flank of the Bocca Nuova this morning. Meantime, lava is still flowing quietly inside the Valle del Bove. There are dense fumarollic clouds on the SE Crater, but this parameter has to be taken carefully as it is closely linked to the hygrometry of the air.
19:30: The thermal anomaly has vanished during the day. This evening, the situation is globally quiet, with lava still flowing into the Valle del Bove. Occasional ash clouds also come out of the SE Crater.
