Après le projet de pont entre la Calabre et la Sicile en Italie, voici le projet de tunnel entre l’Islande continentale et les îles Vestmann !
Les discussions autour de ce tunnel durent depuis plusieurs années. En 2021, un document a été soumis au Parlement proposant une étude de faisabilité géologique. Ce document précisait qu’« une étude de faisabilité a été menée en 2000, examinant plusieurs options, dont un tunnel sous-marin et un tunnel maritime […] Il est important de poursuivre le projet afin de déterminer la faisabilité d’une liaison routière entre le continent et les îles.»
En 2023, un groupe de travail a été mis en place pour évaluer la faisabilité du projet. Un accord a été finalisé avec l’Association agricole de Flói et Skeið pour la réalisation de carottages qui fourniraient des informations essentielles sur les couches géologiques et les fondations le long du tracé proposé.
L’objectif principal du projet était d’étudier la possibilité de construire une liaison routière en cartographiant les conditions géologiques. Les données obtenues grâce aux carottages constitueraient un élément clé pour évaluer la faisabilité technique du projet. En 2023, il a été décidé que les forages auraient lieu sur deux sites clés : Eiði, sur l’île de Heimaey, et Landeyjasandur, près de la ferme de Kross. Les préparatifs devaient débuter début avril 2024, et les forages débuteraient fin avril. Cette phase de recherche devait s’achever début juillet.
Un communiqué de presse de décembre 2025 indiquait que la société Eyjagöng ehf. souhaitait lever des fonds pour réaliser des études géologiques à Heimaey et à Kross, dans l’île de Landeyjar. L’article expliquait que la construction de tunnels routiers vers Heimaey transformerait radicalement les transports en Islande.

Les îles Westmann sont un chapelet de 18 îles et îlots dont une seule est habitée. Heimaey, l’île la plus vaste de l’archipel accueille un peu plus de 4 000 habitants. Heimaey a été rendue célèbre par l’éruption du volcan Eldfell le 23 janvier 1973. La population a été évacuée notamment sur des bateaux de pêche qui avaient été retenus au port la veille à cause d’une tempête. La coulée de lave émise par le volcan a menacé de détruire le port dont dépendait la vie du village et de ses habitants, mais il put être sauvé. Un tiers de la ville fut cependant détruite. La majorité des habitants ont réintégré l’île une fois l’éruption terminée.
D’un point de vue pratique, l’archipel des Westmann est distant d’une dizaine de kilomètres des côtes sud de l’Islande continentale. Il faut compter une quarantaine de minutes pour effectuer la traversée en ferry entre Landeyjahöfn et Heimaey, avec une mer qui est souvent agitée.

The Westman Islands are a group of 18 islands and islets, only one of which is inhabited. Heimaey, the largest island in the archipelago, is home to just over 4,000 people. Heimaey became famous with the eruption of the Eldfell volcano on January 23, 1973. The population was evacuated, notably on fishing boats that had been held up in the harbor the previous day due to a storm. The lava flow from the volcano threatened to destroy the harbor, on which the village and its inhabitants depended, but it was saved. However, a third of the town was destroyed. The majority of the inhabitants returned to the island once the eruption had ended.
From a practical point of view, the Westman Islands are located about ten kilometers off the southern coast of mainland Iceland. The ferry crossing between Landeyjahöfn and Heimaey takes about forty minutes, with the sea often being rough.
