The volcano is still very active. Seismicity is still elevated and there are reports of many roaring explosions, sometimes like “cannon shots” that rattle the windows as far as baños 8 km to the north. They are accompanied by ash clouds up to 5.5 km high, that sometimes generate ahfall, especially on the SW flank of the volcano. On August 28th, lahars interrumpted the traffic on the road between Ambato and Baños.

The July 21 fissure system that opened to the east of Pu’u o’o continues to erupt. The Observatory refers to the different fissures with the names Segment A, B, C and D. Segment A is currently inactive. Fissure segment B continues to build a perched lava pond whose level is about 30 metres high. Fissure segment C continues to support a smaller perched pond. Fissure segment D continues to feed an `a`a flow advancing to the northeast around the north side of Kupaianaha. Lava burnt some spots of vegetation (“kipuka” in Hawaiian) whose smoke can clearly be seen on the webcam.
The volcano – which was already very active a few months ago – spewed ash early this morning, blanketing fields and villages as far as five kilometres away, but there was no immediate sign of a major eruption, according to PHILVOCS scientists.
