medium_drapeau_anglais.86.jpgThe Enclos Fouqué was opened to the public this morning at 6:00 (local time). Two observation posts have been set up, with a good view of the eruption site. However, visitors will have to leave the observation platforms before 15:00. The access to the Enclos is forbidden at night.
The eruption itself is stable. The tremor is still quite high. Nobody knows what will happen in the days to come as the volcano is highly unpredictable!

medium_drapeau_anglais.85.jpgAn impressive and very active cone is shedding very fluid lava that is spreading inside the Dolomieu Crater. The website of the Journal de l’Ile shows very nice pictures of the eruption. The Enclos Fouqué might be re-opened this weekend, provided the access to the eruptive site is made safe.

Etna (Sicile / Italie)

medium_drapeau_anglais.84.jpgThis evening, the webcam directed towards the SE Crater allows to see that the vent is the seat of a nice strombolian activity. It reminds me of what I observed in July 1998, together with a beautiful lava flow which took its source at the bottom of the cone before slowly going down the southern slope. I had pitched my tent at the foot of the cone, with the door turned towards the crater. Lying in my sleeping-bag, I could then enjoy a marvellous show…

Etna (Sicile)

medium_drapeau_anglais.83.jpgThis afternoon, the French agency Aventure et Volcans informed me that a group of their customers had observed an episode of strombolian activity on the SE Crater. This information should be checked but would not be a surprise, as seismic activity suddenly increased on the volcano last nignt. This afternoon, the clouds that wrap the volcano do not allow to appreciate the situation.
This evening, as night is falling on Mount Etna, the weather has cleared up. The webcam gives a fairly good view of the SE Crater and allows to see an occasional glow in this vent, the likely sign of strombolian activity. Seismicity is still relatively high and the hours to come will be important as to the evolution of the situation. The history of the volcano shows that the SE Crater may keep such a strombolian activity for a long period, without any lava flow to be seen.
