After a strong increase in seismic and volcanic activity in April and May, Telica seems to have calmed down a bit. By mid-May, small explosions were observed, with ash plumes rising 500-800 metres above the crater. On May 18th, an explosion that lasted 6 minutes produced a plume that rose 2.6 km above the crater. Women and children living on the flanks of the volcano were evacuated. Explosions continued to be detected on May 19th and 20th with gas-and-ash plumes again rising 500-800 m above the crater. Activity decreased during the following days although an observer reported four strong explosions and gas-and-tephra plumes that rose 500-700 metres high.

One can read in several articles of the Asian press that the situation is developing in the wrong way at Dieng where the Timbang Crater has been releasing high concentrations of CO2 since May 31st in the evening. Authorities have ordered the evacuation of some villages and 1,180 persons have been moved to 17 evacuation centres. The population is firmly asked to obey the evacuation orders and not trust the traditional methods of gas detection (dead rabbits for instance) as the gas usually floats at 0.50 – 1.50 metres above the ground. These animals can be spared but not the humans.
As I put it before, Shiveluch is going through intermittent explosive activity. Scientists have registered two strong eruptions of the volcano in the last 24 hours, with ash plumes up to 9 km high. One of these explosions was recorded by the webcam yesterday (see screenshot here below). The alert level is kept at Orange.
