Etna (Sicile / Italie)

Après plusieurs rectificatifs surprenants, l’épicentre du séisme du 8 novembre à 6h51 a finalement été localisé comme suit : 30 km au NO de Catane, 85 km au NO de Syracuse et 90 km au SO de Messine, à 10 km de profondeur. Pas si sûr que l’Etna soit hors de cause, comme je l’écrivais précédemment au vu des premières analyses de l’événement ! Il va falloir suivre attentivement le comportement du volcan dans les prochains jours. L’ouverture d’une bouche comme celle qui vient de s’ouvrir sur le flanc du Cratère SE a souvent été suivie d’une éruption du volcan. Voir ci-dessous la bouche qui s’était ouverte dans le Cratère NE quelques semaines avant l’éruption de 1991-1993.

After several surprising changes, the epicentre of the earthquake that occurred on November 8th at 6:51 was located as follows: 30 km NW of Catania, 85 km NW of Syracusa et 90 km SW of Messina, at a depth of 10 km. Not so far from Mount Etna whose responsibility can’t be rejected! One should watch carefully the volcano’s behaviour in the coming days. In the past, the opening of a vent like the current one on the SE Crater was often followed by an eruption. Here is a picture of the vent that opened on the NE Crater in 1991 a few weeks before the start of the 1991-1993 eruption.
