Santiaguito (Guatemala)

drapeau anglais.jpgBy the end of March, explosions from the lava dome produced ash plumes that rose to altitudes of more than 3 km a.s.l. and drifted W over inhabited areas. On March 29th, pyroclastic avalanches descended the SW flank.

Eyjafjoll (Islande) [suite]

drapeau anglais.jpg23 :00 :  Although one M1 earthquake only has been recorded today in the eruptive zone, activity is getting stronger and stronger tonight. Bursts of lava are coming out of the cone and the webcam image here below confirms that a new vent has opened at the back of the cone. It would be interesting to get an aerial view of the situation.

Eyjafjoll (Islande) [suite]

drapeau anglais.jpg21:00: The weather has cleared up on the eruptive site and it has been a sunny day. This evening, the Fimmvörðuhálsi webcam shows that a cone is building up around the fissure, with a crater where lava is still very active. It seems a new vent has appeared behind the crater (see image here below) and that a lava flow is travelling on the snow, betrayed by a steam plume to the left of the crater.

Seismicity has been low all day.

One can’t help admiring the landscape around the eruption. The beauty of the site should note make us forget that we have to be careful when travelling in such an environment of deserts and mountains. Two persons died yesterday after getting lost. A good map and a GPS are absolutely necessary to travel off the roads in Iceland.

The Civil Protection Department emphasized yesterday that all traffic on Eyjafjallajökull is prohibited and the area in a one-kilometer radius around the crater on Fimmvörduháls is closed.

Shiveluch (Kamchatka / Russie)

drapeau anglais.jpgAccording to the RIA Novosti press agency, the volcano released today an ash and gas plume up to 6.5 km a.s.l. Over the last 24 hours, 63 earthquakes have been recorded in the building close to the volcano and a thermal anomaly has been detected on the dome. Shiveluch is still a danger to aviation.
