Until eight years ago, almost nothing was known about the seamount, largely because its summit sits 1200 metres below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. But as marine biologists began to send unmanned submarines to explore it, they found a pristine environment rich with life and were particularly impressed by the size of the animals.
The seamount last erupted 9.8 million years ago. Another eruption is highly unlikely. Should it erupt, lava would remain below the surface.

2070a1833b4aba76093e03579599d511.jpgNothing much to say about volcanoes at the moment. Concerning natural events on Earth, a powerful M 7.1 earthquake shook the Makulu province in eastern Indonesia on Saturday, with no threat of a tsunami. The epicentre was located 128 km to the north of Saumlaki and 100 km below the sea level.
This parameter is very important. The deeper the epicentre, the lower the risk of damage on earth and of a tsunami. Thus, the M 7.7 earthquake that shook Chile on November 14th would have been a disaster if it had not been 140 km deep.
Scientists are still at a loss in front of earthquakes. They know the areas where seisms are likely to occur but they are still unable to say when the events will take place.

On Monday December 3rd, Australia ratified the Kyoto Protocol about climate change when its new Prime Minister – Kevin Rudd – signed the ratification instrument of the protocol.
This has been the first measure taken by Mr. Rudd since he was sworn in on Monday morning
According to UNO’s instructions, the ratification will be official 90 days after the ratification instrument has been received by the United Nations; Australia will then be a full member of the Kyoto Protocol by the end of March 2008.
The United States is currently the only developed nation that has refused to sign the Kyoto Protocol.
