Donald Trump frise le surmenage ! Au sein d’un tourbillon de décisions prises dès le premier jour de son mandat, il a signé un décret visant à renommer le Golfe du Mexique et le Denali.
Le Golfe du Mexique s’appellera désormais Golfe d’Amérique, et le Denali, le plus haut sommet d’Amérique du Nord avec ses 6190 mètres, redeviendra le mont McKinley, nom qu’il portait avant que Barack Obama ne le change en 2015.
Selon Trump, le changement de nom de ces deux sites naturels vise à honorer la « grandeur de l’Amérique ». Cependant, ce changement de nom n’aura aucune incidence à l’échelle internationale. En ce qui me concerne, je continuerai donc à utiliser Golfe du Mexique et Denali.
Le mont McKinley a été officiellement nommé en l’honneur de William McKinley en 1917, 16 ans après son assassinat lors d’une apparition publique à Buffalo, dans l’État de New York. La montagne avait déjà été officieusement nommée McKinley en 1896 par un chercheur d’or. Pour justifier ce changement, le nouveau président a déclaré que « le président McKinley est honoré car il a donné sa vie pour notre grande nation et il est reconnu comme il se doit pour son héritage historique de protection des intérêts de l’Amérique et de création d’une richesse énorme pour notre nation ».
C’est le président Obama qui avait changé le nom en Denali pour honorer les locuteurs Koyukon des Athabaskans Koyukon qui vivent dans l’intérieur occidental de l’Alaska. L’État d’Alaska avait demandé que la montagne soit officiellement reconnue comme Denali en 1975, mais le changement avait été bloqué au Congrès par une délégation de l’Ohio, État d’origine de McKinley.

En ce qui concerne le Golfe du Mexique, Trump a évoqué le changement de nom au début du mois de janvier 2025 dans un discours sur les tarifs douaniers. « Nous allons changer le nom du Golfe du Mexique en Golfe d’Amérique, qui a une belle résonance. Il couvre un vaste territoire, le Golfe d’Amérique. Quel beau nom et il est approprié. » Alors que le président a déclaré qu’il supprimerait Denali pour honorer William McKinley, il n’a avancé aucune raison autre que la beauté du nom pour justifier le changement de nom de cette partie de l’océan où naissent de nombreux cyclones en raison de la hausse de la température de l’eau. Encore un caprice du président !

Le Kamaʻehuakanaloa, anciennement Lōʻihi jusqu’en 2021, est un volcan sous-marin situé à une trentaine de kilomètres au Sud-Est de l’île d’Hawaï.
Le volcan a été baptisé « Lōʻihi » en 1955 après sa découverte lors d’une campagne de recherche effectuée en 1954. Ce toponyme hawaïen signifie « long » en référence à sa forme allongée. Toutefois, bien qu’hawaïen, il n’était pas assez représentatif de la culture insulaire au regard de chants traditionnels mentionnant Kamaʻehuakanaloa, un volcan sous-marin mythique et dont le nom signifie « enfant rougeoyant de Kanaloa », la divinité de la mer dans la mythologie hawaïenne. Ce nouveau nom a été adopté en juillet 2021 par le Hawaiʻi Board on Geographic Names.

In a flurry of first-day-in-office activity, Donald Trump has signed an order to rename the Gulf of Mexico and Denali.
The Gulf of Mexico will be renamed the Gulf of America, and Denali, the highest peak in North America (6190m), will revert to Mount McKinley, the name it was called before Barack Obama changed it in 2015.
In Trump’s words, the renaming of the two natural features is to honor “American greatness”, However, the renaming will have no bearing on what names are used internationally. As far as I’m concerned, I will keep on using Gulf of Mexico and Denali.
Mount McKinley was officially named in honor of William McKinley in 1917, 16 years after he was assassinated during a public appearance in Buffalo, New York, though it was unofficially named McKinley in 1896 by a gold prospector. To justify the change, the new president said that “President McKinley is honored for giving his life for our great nation and dutifully recognized for his historic legacy of protecting America’s interests and generating enormous wealth for our nation.”
Obama had changed the name to Denali. The name was then given to the mountain by Koyukon speakers of the Koyukon Athabaskans in western interior Alaska. The state of Alaska had requested that the mountain be officially recognized as Denali in 1975, but the change was blocked by a congressional delegation from McKinley’s home state of Ohio.

As far as the Gulf of Mexico is concerned, Trump discussed the name change earlier this month in a speech on tariffs. “We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring. That covers a lot of territory, the Gulf of America. What a beautiful name and it’s appropriate. ” While the president said he would foresake Denali to honor William McKinley, he did not suggest any reason other than the beauty of the name to justify the name change of that part of the ocean where many cyclones are born because of the rising water temperatures. Another president’s whim!

Kamaʻehuakanaloa, formerly Lōʻihi until 2021, is a seamount or undersea volcano located about thirty kilometers southeast of the island of Hawaii.
The volcano was named « Lōʻihi » in 1955 after its discovery during a research campaign carried out in 1954. This Hawaiian toponym means « long » in reference to its elongated shape. However, although Hawaiian, was not considered sufficiently representative of the island culture in view of traditional songs mentioning Kamaʻehuakanaloa, a mythical underwater volcano whose name means « glowing child of Kanaloa », the divinity of the sea in Hawaiian mythology. This new name was adopted in July 2021 by the Hawaiʻi Board on Geographic Names.
In his baptismal fury, will Donald Trump dare to give the underwater volcano back its original name? To do so, he would first have to know that an underwater volcano is rising in the depths off the coast of Hawaii…
