Une éruption du volcan La Cumbre (1476m) sur l’île Fernandina a débuté le 10 avril à 22 heures, sans que la station de Puerto Ayora observe une sismicité préalable. La colonne éruptive, pauvre en cendre et visible sur les images satellites, s’étirait sur 300 km vers l’ouest. Les satellites ont par ailleurs détecté plusieurs points chauds, signes de probables coulées de lave. Les rangers du Parc National des Galapagos sur l’Ile Isabela ont entrepris un survol du volcan pour localiser l’éruption avec précision et pour voir quel impact les coulées pourraient avoir sur la faune et le flore de la région. La dernière éruption du Fernandina remonte à 2005.
An eruption of La Cumbre volcano (1476m) on Fernandina Island began April 10th at 22:00. The seismic station at Puerto Ayora did not record any seismicity associated with the eruption. An eruption column with low ash content was visible on satellite images extending 300 km west of the volcano. Satellite images show several hotspots which may indicate lava flows. Rangers from the Galapagos National Park on Isabela Island are flying over the volcano, to precisely locate the eruption and assess the impact of the lava flows on fauna and flora of the area. The last eruption of Fernandina volcano occurred in 2005.
