Le gouvernement chilien vient d’annoncer que la ville de Chaitén sera déplacée. Elle se trouve actuellement à 9 km au SSO du volcan qui est entré en éruption en mai 2008, après plus de 9000 années de sommeil. La ville s’est trouvée ensevelie sous la cendre et les habitations ont été fortement endommagées par les lahars. Les 5000 habitants ont été évacués et près de 200 familles ont reçu des compensations financières. Le gouvernement a tout d’abord interdit à la population de revenir habiter dans la ville sinistrée, puis a décidé de lever cette interdiction si bien qu’une centaine de personnes vivent aujourd’hui à Chaitén.
Afin d’éviter la spéculation, le gouvernement n’a pas encore dévoilé l’endroit choisi pour reconstruire la ville. Il le fera courant mars. Certains disent qu’il pourrait s’agir de Bahía Pumalín, Santa Bárbara ou Fandango. Le gouvernement a assuré qu’il respecterait le choix de ceux qui voudraient rester habiter dans la ville actuelle, mais a bien prévenu qu’aucun argent public ne serait attribué à « une ville qui ne devrait pas se trouver là où elle est actuellement ».

The Chilean government has announced that Chaiten town will eventually be relocated from its present position 9 km SSW of the volcano which erupted in May 2008 after being dormant for over 9000 years. The town was covered in ash and houses were severely damaged by lahars. The 5,000 inhabitants were evacuated, and nearly 2,000 families received financial assistance. The government initially prohibited residents from returning but later lifted its ban. About 100 people now live in Chaiten town.
In order to prevent land speculation, the government has not yet announced where exactly it plans to relocate Chaitén. It will do so in March. Possibilities include Bahía Pumalín, Santa Bárbara and Fandango. The government assured it will respect the wishes of those who decide to stay in the area but insisted that no public funds will be allocated “to a city that we feel should not be located where it is”.
