Le Davidson Seamount, volcan sous-marin à 130km au SO de Monterey (Californie) dont les versants sont riches en forêts coralliennes et abondent en éponges colorées, vient de recevoir une protection nationale et fait désormais partie du Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, avec de sévères restrictions sur les activités (depuis les forages pétroliers jusqu’au jetski) susceptibles de mettre le site en péril.
Il y a encore 8 ans, on ne connaissait pas grand-chose de ce volcan sous-marin dont le sommet se trouve à 1200 mètres sous la surface de l’Océan Pacifique. Lorsque les biologistes marins ont envoyé des robots pour l’explorer, ils ont découvert un environnement particulièrement intact et ont été impressionnés par la taille des animaux.
La dernière éruption du Davidson Seamount remonte à 9,8 millions d’années. Une nouvelle éruption est fort peu probable. De toute façon, dans une telle éventualité, la lave resterait sous la surface de l’océan.

Until eight years ago, almost nothing was known about the seamount, largely because its summit sits 1200 metres below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. But as marine biologists began to send unmanned submarines to explore it, they found a pristine environment rich with life and were particularly impressed by the size of the animals.
The seamount last erupted 9.8 million years ago. Another eruption is highly unlikely. Should it erupt, lava would remain below the surface.
