Cartographie d’un volcan sous-marin

Des chercheurs de la Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (Massachusetts) ont récemment réussi à réaliser une superbe carte en couleur d’un volcan sous-marin se trouvant à environ 1600 mètres de profondeur dans l’Océan Pacifique et à environ 550 km au NE de la Nouvelle Zélande. C’est la première fois que la cartographie d’un volcan sous-marin est réalisée pour détecter les émissions hydrothermales. La caldeira recèle deux cônes volcaniques ; celui que l’on peut voir à l’avant gauche se dresse à environ 350 mètres au-dessus du plancher et se trouve à une profondeur d’environ 1100 mètres. Le cône de droite, un peu plus petit, est probablement plus vieux, mais on observe encore une activité hydrothermale intense à son sommet.

Researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (Massachusetts) have recently used a robotic underwater vehicle to ‘paint’ images of a submarine volcano about 1600 metres deep in the Pacific Ocean, and located about 550 kilometres northeast of New Zealand. This is the first time that a submarine arc volcano has been mapped and surveyed for hydrothermal venting. The caldera has two volcanic cones; the one in the left foreground rises about 350 metres above the caldera floor to a depth of about 1,100 metres below sea surface. A smaller cone can be seen to the right; it is probably older but still has an intense hydrothermal system at its summit.
