On a pu remarquer ce matin vers 8h52 (GMT) un pic du tremor ainsi qu’une violente secousse sur les sismogrammes. Il ne s’agissait pas d’un réveil du Cratère SE, mais d’une explosion de cendre au niveau de la Bocca Nuova, sans projection de matériaux à haute température. Boris Behncke (INGV Catane) me rappelait que des événements semblables se sont produits dans la Bocca Nuova en août 2010 et en juin-juillet 2011 (avec une activité strombolienne en prime). Ces événements explosifs soudains justifient – avec les paroxysmes du Cratère SE – l’interdiction d’accès au sommet de l’Etna.
En ce 8 mai, j’ai une pensée toute particulière pour le regretté Antonio Nicoloso – chef des guides de l’Etna – dont ce serait l’anniversaire.
This morning at 8 :52 or so (GMT), one could see the tremor reaching a peak together with a strong earthquake on the webicorders. It was not the awakening of the New SE Crater but an ash explosion within Bocca Nuova, without any ejection of hot material. Boris Behncke (INGV Catania) reminded me that there were similar events in August 2010 and June-July 2011 at the Bocca Nuova, the latter culminating in one week of Strombolian activity. This explosion, together with the paroxysms at the NSE Crater, justifes the interdiction of access to the summit of Mount Etna.
As far as Mount Etna is concerned, today (May 8th) would be the birthday of the late Antonio Nicoloso, leader of the guides and a close friend of mine.
