Comme je l’écrivais le 24 octobre, le Visitors Center de Coldwater Ridge a dû fermer ses portes, suite à des difficultés financières que rencontre d’ailleurs tout le parc, actuellement géré par le Forest Service. Afin de trouver une solution, un groupe consultatif vient d’être créé afin d’étudier la possibilité d’ériger le Mount St. Helens Volcanic Monument en parc national. Le groupe devrait se réunir au printemps prochain et livrer les conclusions de son travail dès l’été. Un obstacle à surmonter concerne la chasse, interdite dans les parcs nationaux. Or, la région du St Helens abonde en wapitis et autres cervidés.

As I put it on October 24th, the Coldwater Ridge Visitors Center had to close because of financial difficulties encountered elsewhere in the park which is currently managed by the Forest Service. In order to find a solution, an advisory group has just been set up. It will study whether the Mount St. Helens Volcanic Monument should become a national park. The group will meet next spring and have some conclusion by the summer. An obstacle to overcome will concern hunting which is not allowed in national parks whereas the area around Mount St. Helens is popular for deer and elk hunting.
