Alors que les volcanologues indonésiens sont décontenancés par le comportement du Kelud, les villageois sollicitent de plus en plus l’opinion des mystiques et autres devins qui s’accordent tous pour dire que le volcan entrera en éruption au cours des sept prochains jours.
Le Jakarta Post donne l’exemple d’une femme – l’une des sages d’un village au pied du volcan – qui a soigneusement préparé 12 tasses de café chaud ainsi qu’un paquet de cigarettes à l’attention du gardien spirituel de la montagne. Une fois par semaine, elle parcourt les 10 km jusqu’au cratère pour lui offrir ces présents. Elle affirme que ce rituel lui permet de communiquer avec le gardien spirituel qui lui a indiqué par le passé quand quelque chose allait se produire. Jusqu’à présent, elle n’a reçu aucun signe de sa part. Selon cette villageoise, tant que les gens seront dans les abris et que la police gardera le volcan, il n’y aura pas d’éruption. Le Kelud entrera en éruption au moment où les gens reviendront chez eux et où la police s’en ira….
Il est également bon de rappeler que, il y a quelques semaines, le juru kunci, gardien « réel » du Kelud avait prédit que le volcan n’entrerait pas en éruption avant sept mois…..

With Indonesian volcanologists apparently unable to understand Mount Kelud’s behaviour, villagers are turning more and more to local mystics and soothsayers who all seem to agree that the mountain will erupt in the next seven days.
The Jakarta Post gives the example of a woman – an elder of a village on the slope of the volcano – who carefully prepared 12 cups of hot coffee and a pack of cigarettes for the spiritual guardian of the mountain. Once a week, she travels the 10 kilometers to the crater and offers them to it. She says the ritual has enabled her to communicate with the spirit, which always alerted her in the past when something was about to happen. Up to now, she hasn’t received any sign that the mountain will erupt. According to the woman, as long as the villagers still live in the shelters, as long as the police still guard the peak, then it won’t erupt. It will erupt the moment the villagers return to their homes and the police leave their posts.
We should also bear in mind that, a few weeks ago, the juru kunci, the real custodian of Mount Kelud predicted the volcano would not erupt before seven months…..
