D’après les volcanologues indonésiens, l’ « île » qui est apparue dans le cratère du volcan est constituée d’un magma récent qui a réussi à se frayer un chemin dans les fractures qui parcourent l’ancienne lave de l’éruption de 1990. Ce nouveau magma a formé un dôme de 70 mètres de hauteur en 150 mètres de diamètre.
Le dôme a commencé à s’édifier samedi soir, alors que les volcanologues quittaient précipitamment leurs postes d’observation car ils pensaient qu’une grosse éruption était en train de commencer. Selon eux, il s’agit d’une « éruption effusive », c’est-à-dire que l’énergie se libère progressivement et n’est pas suffisante pour pulvériser le magma de l’éruption de 1990.

According to Indonesian volcanologists, the “island” that has risen from the crater of the volcano consists of new lava that has gradually been coming out through the cracks in the old lava from the 1990 eruption and created a new lava dome which is now 70 metres high and about 150 metres in diameter.
The dome first appeared on Saturday night, when volcanologists mistakenly thought a large eruption was occurring so they abandoned their posts. They say the volcano has been making an ‘effusive’ eruption, meaning the energy release has been gradual and not strong enough to tear through the magma left behind after the last eruption.
